Trail Report: Ashland County
Reported By: Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce
Date of Report: 01/05/2015
Trail Conditions: Trails Closed
Snow Cover: 4-8″
Area Report: The snowmobile trails throughout Ashland County are still officially CLOSED! However, snowmobilers are advised they may currently ride at their own risk. The trails will be declared open as soon as weather permits.
Groomers are once again out packing the trails, but there are still patches of open water in some places. “We are still breaking through with the groomers,” noted Bill Chandler, president of the Ashland County Snowmobile Alliance, “and we are still pulling up black muck.”
More snow is needed, especially in the northern portion of Ashland County, before the trails will be ready. Chandler said the trails from Marengo to Ashland are in the worst shape and he advises snowmobilers to avoid them. Currently, Southern Ashland County around Glidden and Butternut, which has had more snow than the Ashland area, is where the riding is best.
The Ashland area forecast for this week (Jan. 5-9) calls for some snow and frigid temperatures with highs below zero or in the single digits, so the outlook is very favorable for the trails to be declared open in the next few days.
The Tri-County Corridor, a 62-mile stretch of abandoned railroad right-of-way running from Ashland to Superior, is always OPEN. The Corridor was last groomed on Jan. 3 and is in great shape with a good, smooth surface for riding, according to Bill Chandler.
