Trail Report For: Sayner – 01/18/2015

Reported By: George – Sayner/Star Lake Barnstormers

Trail Report: Sayner

Date of Report: 01/18/2015

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 4 to 5″ Average – On The Trail

Area Report: .
Our trails continue to be good on average, but if we don’t get some decent workable snow soon, they will degrade rapidly. The fair to poor areas are growing, where snow-cover is thin and the trail is pretty brown. Many sections are still good to excellent. We have light snow predicted again for today. Lets hope that happens – we NEED it bad!!! Traffic was extremely heavy yesterday as expected. Last night before grooming – most trails were trashed. They were all flat again this morning, but with this warmer weather – they will not hold for long. Most corners will be icy. Tight twisty sections with heavy tree cover will be very snirty. This is because the tree cover does not allow all the snow to make its way to the trail bed.

We, along with all the clubs, are doing the best we can with what Mother Nature gives us to work with. No club can afford to groom the trails more than once a day. With the heavy traffic, some sections could be groomed once an hour and they would not hold. Also, when the weather is warmer (upper 20s – low 30s), they do NOT get a chance to set up and any amount of traffic tears them up rapidly.

Logging operations continue between the following intersection numbers; 205 & 353 on trail 6/10/11 and on 11/51 between 344 & 352. Out in that area, there are also logging trucks using Vandercook Rd, which is a Cross Country Cruisers trail. The speed limit on Vandercook has been reduced to 35mph. Trucks are hauling out from a lot of areas – so PLEASE be ready at all times to get out of their way! Get off to the side if you can or turn around as quickly as you can. These loggers are not out there to ruin your snowmobiling experience. They are out there trying to make a living. There ARE LOGGING AHEAD SIGNS. Pay attention – heed their warning – SLOW DOWN!!! If you encounter a truck being loaded or a logging machine on the trail; DO NOT assume an operator of the machine or driver of the truck sees you. Always wait until the operator/driver signals you to pass or wait until they have moved off to the side.

We have 15 groomer drivers this year, as usual, led by trail boss Dennis Horan. All of our drivers do an awesome job. Please give them a thank you if you see one of them somewhere!

As always, PLEASE RIDE SAFE!!! Expect the unexpected. Respect especially the groomers and also other riders. You are not the only one on the trail, so always expect traffic to be coming at you around every corner. Slow down and ride another day!!!
