Trail Report: Keweenaw Peninsula / Houghton-Hancock, South Range, Copper Harbor
Reported By: Tammi the Trail Goddess at Dan’s Recreation
Date of Report: 03/09/2015
Trail Conditions: Very Good
Snow Cover: 22″ to 38″
Area Report: It is a balmy 35 degrees outside today and I might say that I thought 35 would feel a lot warmer than it does! Especially when just a few short days ago it was 22 below when I went to work! Kind of cloudy out so the sun is not melting the snow on the trails like it could. If you are wondering if you should bother coming up to ride, the answer is YES!!!! There is plenty of snow out on the trails, even going through town, and it will definitely last through the weekend anyway. The main roads are bare, but the side roads are still snow covered. All trails are open and being groomed daily, with the exception of trail 122 from Lake Linden to Gay, which is closed due to logging. You can still get to Gay from the main trail 3 on 124 or from Lac Labelle on 133. This may be the beginning of the end of the season so I would advise you get your friends and family together and make one more trip up north to ride for the season.
Remember to respect private property and others on the trail, stay off the lakes–not safe ever, don’t drink and ride, and slow down and appreciate all there is to see in our beautiful area.
Just a side note: fart cans are illegal in Michigan. If you have one on your sled, you will be ticketed. The DNR is out enforcing this law so be prepared to be stopped and have your decibels checked. Thanks in advance for removing them. If this continues to be a problem, it is likely that many trails that cross private property will be closed off by the owners. These owners are kind enough to allow snowmobiles access across their property and don’t deserve to have to listen to the excessive noise the cans add.
