Reported By: Sayner/Star Lake Barnstormers

Trail Report: Sayner

Date of Report: 12/05/2015

Trail Conditions: Trails Closed

Snow Cover: 3 inches +/-

Area Report: Welcome to the 2015/2016 snowmobile season. Our trails remain closed – currently for muzzle loader deer hunting. Right after muzzle loader – there is a 4 day antlerless hunt. Vilas County snowmobile trails are being inspected now. It takes 10 or 11 days to inspect all 11 club’s trail systems.

The soonest estimated time that trails can open in Vilas is December 15th. It all depends on if all 11 club’s trails have been inspected, passed, AND most importantly that we have snow conditions that warrant opening. The reason it will probably be the 15th is that it takes almost a full day for some clubs to open their gates. That gate opening can’t happen until the 14th – following the 4 day antlerless hunt.

We have not had that big dumping of snow like we had one year ago. Currently, we only have about 3 inches on the ground. Yesterday and again today – we will be in the middle 40s for a high, unfortunately, with a lot of sun. Next week is forecasted to be about the same.

While it would be nice to have more snow on the ground for land trails – especially land trails that do not cross swamps – on the other hand that big dumping of snow we got in November, one year ago, really screwed up trails that cross swamps and wet areas. It did not allow the swamps & wet areas to freeze very well. Some clubs (not us thankfully) were having problems even into February – sinking groomers in mud & water. This year – without a big snow cover they might have a chance to freeze – if only we were receiving some really cold weather. We have had nights down close to zero (+/-) but there have been too many days with sun and middle 40s.

Some lakes have frozen over but are NOT nearly thick enough to think about crossing – at least not by anyone in their right mind!!! -LOL AS ALWAYS – NEVER cross a lake unless it is marked with a marked crossing!

We will do our best to keep you up to date and let you know how conditions are developing.
