Trail Report For: Sayner – 12/28/2015

Reported By: Sayner/Star Lake Barnstormers

Trail Report: Sayner

Date of Report: 12/28/2015

Trail Conditions: Trails Closed

Snow Cover: 2 +/- inches

Area Report: –
As the next storm gets closer, the National Weather Service issued a “Winter Storm Warning”. THE NWS predicts 4 to 8 inches, beginning late this afternoon (Monday). Local weather maps show our area receiving 4 to 5 with heavier amounts to the south. IF we do get this snow – please be patient. The trails will NOT immediately open. All of the clubs need to get out, clear the trees & branches that will be down from the storm, and pan the trails. After that the trails need to be deemed safe.

First though – we need to get that snow. I’ve seen too many of these “major winter storm” forecasts just like this one that never happened. I sympathize with riders, that have been waiting since last March and planning all summer & fall, to ride again. We feel your pain!!!

Right now there is no date set for opening. We all have to wait and see what this storm does. IF we get significant snow from this storm, we will get out, pan, and remove (AGAIN) all brush that the storm brings down. After that – there will be a determination on safety of the entire County’s system. Some clubs have sections of trail with swamps and wet areas that need to freeze. Some of these sections might need to remain closed until they freeze. The Barnstormers do not have wet areas or swamps but we have sections of trail, which are NOT gated, that are terribly rutted from 4 wheel drive trucks. It will take significant snow fall and grooming to make these areas smooth and safe. The non-gated sections with bad ruts are mostly in our western area, including trails 51,11, 9, & 6.

Please also keep in mind that as of yesterday (Sunday) many of the bigger lakes were still wide open or had significant open water. Even IF the remaining open water froze last night; it will be sometime yet before it is safe. The coming snow – if we get it – will slow down the process of freezing the open water, wet areas, and swamps.

First things first – cooperation from Ma Nature!!! COME ON MA – PLEASE!!!
