Trail Report: Bayfield County

Reported By: Sue

Date of Report: 01/15/2016

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 6-20 inches

Area Report: With cold and new snow this is the first time an actual base has been established so trails are best so far this season.

The trails in and around Barnes including trail #7 and #17 have been groomed and are in fair to good condition. Trail #17 N and #18 N have been groomed this week and are also in fair to good condition. Trail #31 N has been groomed, also in fair condition, use caution in this area. Trail #31S has been groomed to Mulligan Creek / Ounce River Crossing, good condition. The trail beyond the Ounce River bridge to the Sawyer county line has not been groomed due to unfrozen wetlands. Grooming and brushing will resume by the end of the week and into next week.

In Drummond, all trails are open and will be freshly groomed by Friday mid-day except for #63 across the Bibon Swamp. That section is passable by sled but not groomer. Groomed trails include trail #63 to Lake Owen, trail #63 to Grand View, Trail #7 to Barnes, Trail #4 to Sanborn, and trail #6 towards Delta.
With cold and new snow this is the first time an actual base has been established so trails are best so far this season.

In the Cable area, all of the trails were groomed as of Thursday night. Everything except Trail 90 to Clam Lake has been fully done. Trails are in fair to good condition, flat with a few thin spots.

In the Mason area, Trail #4 is closed from Horstman Road to Mason, and Trail #63 is closed from Bibon Road to the Tri-County Corridor. Coming from the south, you can take the new Trail #4 EAST of Mason to connect to Trail #9 in Ashland County which will bring you to the Tri-County Corridor. From Grand View, take Trail #63 north to Bibon Road. Cross over Bibon Road onto Wilson Road. Take Wilson Road north to Highway 63. Cross Highway 63 onto Brown Road and then follow the trail signs to Trail #9 in Ashland County. Take Trail #9 north to the Tri-County Corridor.

In the Iron River area, all trails south of Iron River (Trails 22,24,31 and 4) have been groomed this week including trail 4 to Delta/Horstman Rd. Trails 21/31 towards Valhalla were groomed Thursday. Tri County Corridor from Brule to FR241 has also been completed.

In the Herbster area, grooming of trails #1, #41, and #40 will be done Friday. The trail into Cornucopia is not clear yet but will be cleared as soon as possible. Hopefully the cooler temps will freeze up some of the wet areas. Trail #1 between Highway 13 and Lenawee Road is open but will be plowed for the rest of the season. West of Herbster, snowmobile trail #1 will be groomed from Port Wing to the Iron River bridge on Highway 13 west of Port Wing. The portion of trail #1 from Port Wing east towards Herbster will be open but mostly UNGROOMED due to ice and high water in the Flag River bottoms. Grooming east of Port Wing in that area will begin as soon as ice conditions permit.

In the Bayfield area, Trail #1 is open to Legendary Waters.

Happy sledding!
