Trail Report: Oconto County
Reported By: Oconto County Tourism
Date of Report: 01/14/2016
Trail Conditions: Fair
Snow Cover: 1-5
Area Report: Townsend (Red Arrow) – It’s 9 degrees in beautiful downtown Townsend this morning. The lakes and marshes are now frozen so the trails are now firm in all areas of our network. The trails are in fair to good condition in the Red Arrow system with a rock scrubbing an occasional ski so be alert. The Nicolet trail through town has some dirt scattered throughout, but the 1 1/2″ of wet snow we got the other day has helped all the trails by freezing down to add to the base.
We will be going out with the groomer to touch up the trails today but won’t be resuming a regular grooming schedule until more snow falls.
Lakewood (Paul Bunyan) – Trails are open.
The Chute Pond Snowmobile Club trails are open, but because of lack of snow, we are not grooming at this time. Our overall trail condition is “poor to fair early season”. The Nicolet State Trail is thin and poor, with mostly gravel in many places. Wooded trails vary in condition, mostly fair.
The rain from late last week froze down into an icy trail base, and we’ve gotten an inch here and there dustings of fresh, fluffy snow- a lot of it blows away as soon as it lands. We need more snow before conditions improve enough to start grooming again. Please note that the ice formed very late on all area lakes- some will have thin spots, and if there’s current there may be open water. Stay safe- stay off the lakes until you know it’s safe.
Oconto Falls – Trails are CLOSED.
Lena – Trails are CLOSED.
Chase – Trails are CLOSED.
