Reported By: Sayner/Star Lake Barnstormers
Trail Report: Sayner
Date of Report: 01/19/2016
Trail Conditions: Early Season
Snow Cover: 3 inches avg on the trail
Area Report: –
Other reports show more snow cover than what I report. I report what is on the trail – not what is in the woods. We started off with about 6 1/2 inches when the trails opened. We have had a few small snow storms come through that left maybe an inch or a little more each. When you pan that snow down and pull it into holes, it leaves about 3 inches on the average – on the trail.
I returned the Trail Conditions section to “early season”. This is because one word cannot cover the conditions of our entire system. I have spoken with many riders in the St Germain/Sayner area over the last few days. Not one ever said its bad out there. Most said they were pleasantly surprised how good it was considering the lack of good snow for the groomers to work with. They report that – yes – you do come across a few bumps here and there and/or marginal snow cover – but that was not bothering them a bit. They were all happy to be here.
It really comes down to opinions. What one person might think are good conditions – the next might think are poor. This is why I try my best to describe what is out there and you decide if it is good enough to ride. I WILL NOT exaggerate conditions to get you to come here nor will I encourage you to stay home. Our businesses need you here – and – each day, for their sake & yours, I pray for more snow.
It is a mixed bag on the trails. The further north you get within our system – the better – due to more snow as you travel north. Our groomers are performing miracles out there as they always do. Every single one of our drivers do a great job. There is enough snow for slider lube everywhere. If you need perfect/pristine trails everywhere you ride – you would probably be disappointed out there right now. It is not the best for the longevity of carbides & ice picks. If you don’t mind marginal conditions here and there – you will be happy. All the riders I spoke with said it is more than tolerable riding around here and you don’t have to go very far north to see more snow. Also, please be aware that the marginal conditions have also made it icy in a lot of areas. So, as you always should anyway – ride with caution. Slow down and ride another day!!!
We do have a slight warm up coming in. Hopefully it will bring in some moisture in the form of white gold. It will only take a couple inches of wet snow to drastically improve conditions.
VERY IMPORTANT: We do have logging going on up near or in Star Lake. ANYWHERE you encounter a logging operation – DO NOT CONFRONT THE LOGGERS!!! There was already an incident where a couple riders confronted a logger and it had to get smoothed over. The loggers are not out there trying to make life difficult for or inconvenience snowmobilers. They are out there trying to make a living. Due to a change in the law, they now have the right to shut snowmobile trails down, to complete their logging, if they so choose. If snowmobilers bother them too much – thats exactly what they will do – shut the trail down until they are done logging. If it takes them all the way to and/or past March – goodbye to that trail for the season. So PLEASE – be patient, give the loggers room, get the heck out of their way, and give them the utmost courtesy possible.
