Reported By: Sayner/Star Lake Barnstormers
Trail Report: Sayner
Date of Report: 01/27/2016
Trail Conditions: Good
Snow Cover: 4 inches (+/-) On The Trail
Area Report: –
We received about 2 inches of wet snow yesterday. One inch of wet snow is more valuable than 8 inches of fluffy junk when it comes to doing good for our trails. We now have something to work with as the Barnstormers will have a full grooming schedule for the rest of the week & weekend. The forecast is calling for some light snowfalls, off and on, for the rest of the week as well. You just can’t ask for a better scenario for improving the quality of our trails. Multiple small snowfalls are better than one big dumping. Its no different than building a gravel road. Its best to put down an inch or two at a time, level it, and compact it – then put down another layer.
No matter how much the trails improve, it is always best to ride with caution and be prepared for anything!!! Approach every corner as if there will be a full speed sled coming at you in that corner. Ride right – stay to the right. DO NOT ride as if your the only one out there!!! Stay on the marked lake crossings.
Slow down and ride another day!!!
VERY IMPORTANT: The logging that was going on up by Star Lake might finally be finished in that particular area but they can move in and start logging in another area with no warning. Be ready for it. If you come across another logging operation anywhere – DO NOT CONFRONT THE LOGGERS!!! There was an incident earlier this year where a couple riders confronted a logger and it had to get smoothed over. These loggers are not out there trying to make life difficult for or inconvenience snowmobilers. They are out there trying to make a living. Due to a change in the law, they now have the right to shut snowmobile trails down in order to complete their logging, if they so choose. If snowmobilers bother them too much – thats exactly what they will do – shut the trail down until they are done logging. If it takes them all the way to and/or past March – goodbye to that section of trail for the season. So PLEASE – be patient, give the loggers room, get the heck out of their way, and give them the utmost courtesy possible.
