Trail Report For: Sayner – 01/29/2016

Reported By: Sayner/Star Lake Barnstormers

Trail Report: Sayner

Date of Report: 01/29/2016

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 3 inches (+/-) on the trail

Area Report: –
A series of smaller snow falls this week has really improved our trails. While, of course, we cannot control how much we get from any given system, the smaller 1 to 2 inch storms work out best rather than 6 or more inches. Its just like building a gravel road. Always best to put down a couple inches, level it, & compact it – then a couple more inches. What makes the biggest difference is that the recent snow has been heavier and wetter. An inch of wetter snow is better than 8 inches of fluff.

I’m not going to say that you will not find a bump or two out there somewhere but the not-so-great areas have been reduced and are fewer and farther between. Where we did have ruts from 4X4 trucks caused last fall on Trail 51 might have a couple spots not so great. Sections with heavy tree cover might be a little shy on snow – but even in the best of times that can be the case. As always – there could also be an icy area here end there.

About the only two possible negatives for this weekend is that we expect heavy traffic and there is a short lived warm up forecasted for tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday. Monday looks to be right back to normal temps and the great news is that there is snow in the forecast for ALMOST everyday! Just as long as the evil sun does not come out too much this warm up will not hurt much – if at all.

Lakes are marked but stay by the markers. As ALWAYS: Expect the unexpected, slow down, and ride another day!!!

VERY IMPORTANT: The logging that was going on up by Star Lake might finally be finished in that particular area but they can move in and start logging in another area with no warning. Be ready for it. If you come across another logging operation anywhere – DO NOT CONFRONT THE LOGGERS!!! There was an incident earlier this year where a couple riders confronted a logger and it had to get smoothed over. These loggers are not out there trying to make life difficult for or inconvenience snowmobilers. They are out there trying to make a living. Due to a change in the law, they now have the right to shut snowmobile trails down in order to complete their logging, if they so choose. If snowmobilers bother them too much – thats exactly what they will do – shut the trail down until they are done logging. If it takes them all the way to and/or past March – goodbye to that section of trail for the season. So PLEASE – be patient, give the loggers room, get the heck out of their way, and give them the utmost courtesy possible.
