Trail Report For: Bayfield County – 02/26/2016

Trail Report: Bayfield County

Reported By: Bayfield County Forestry

Date of Report: 02/26/2016

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: Spotty to 16 inches

Area Report: South Shore: All trails are groomed and are fair to good with snow cover by the lake getting thin. Trail 1 from the Iron River Bridge on highway 13 west of Port Wing to Touve Road is in fair to OK condition. Warm temperatures and rain have taken their toll. We are hoping for additional snow to provide some “groomer fodder”. Trail #1 between Highway 13 and Lenawee Road is open but will be plowed for the rest of the season. There are a couple new areas being logged around Cornucopia, one where Trail #1 crosses Klemik Road and the other also near Trail #1 off Mountain Road.

Washburn/Bayfield: All trails up by Valhalla area will be groomed by the weekend. They are still in good shape even with the warmer weather. Trail #1 is open to Legendary Water Casino.

Iron River: Trails around the Iron River area fair to good condition. The warm weather caused some thin areas and icy hills/corners. With little cooler weather we are grooming again tonight to make the best of it before the weekend.

Mason: Trail #4 is closed from Horstman Road to Mason, and Trail #63 is closed from Bibon Road to the Tri-County Corridor. The new Trail #4 EAST of Mason connects with Trail #9 in Ashland County, then to the Tri-County Corridor. From the south, take Trail #63 north. Cross over Bibon Road onto Wilson Road and follow it to Highway 63. Cross Highway 63 onto Brown Road and then follow the trail signs to Trail #9. Take Trail #9 north to the Tri-County Corridor.

Barnes: The snow depth in the Barnes area is holding its own. We did receive 2-3 inches of new snow on Tuesday in the area. The trails to the north and east of Barnes (Trail 31, 7, 18 and the east portion of 27N) are still in good riding condition, though icy conditions exist on some corners. Grooming will only be done near town this week but the majority of the trails are flat and ride-able. Trail 7 west of Hwy 27 is in poor condition. Icy conditions and dirt spots are common. There will be some logging activity on a small section of trail #31.

Drummond: Wednesday brought 2” of new snow to the Drummond area with the possibility of more in the forecast. All trails have been groomed and are snow covered and in good condition. Some trails to the north, #63 and #4 have spotty coverage on the road routes but are still mostly covered. The tractor/groomer will be out brushing this week so all should use caution on our trails. This includes trail #63 to Lake Owen, #63 to Grand View, #7 to Barnes, #4 to Sanborn, #6 towards Delta.

Namakagon: Trails are groomed as of Wednesday (2/24/16) and are in good condition. We did receive rain last weekend but with less snowmobile traffic, due to the American Birkebeiner Ski Race, the trails have made it through. Trails that run along roads may have to be used with caution since our roads are mostly bare. We’ll continue to groom as the temperatures allow. Please ride with caution with all the extra traffic from the World’s Largest Weenie Roast!

Cable: Trails in the Cable Area are in fair condition after a warm weekend. We have a 2-4” flat base, even with the warm weather. Groomers are out day and night – remember they do have the right of way. Trail 90 is closed due to logging in the area, a suggested reroute would be to take FR191 (Old Grade Road) to trail 80.
