Trail Report: Keweenaw Peninsula / Houghton-Hancock, South Range, Copper Harbor

Reported By: Tammi the Trail Goddess at Dan’s Recreation

Date of Report: 02/02/2016

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 22″ -30″

Area Report: Well, our trails certainly took a hit over the weekend, with 2 days of high temps and the 5000 people here riding!! But, no fear, snow is on the way tonight and tomorrow (and actually at least a couple of inches everyday for the foreseeable future too) and the temps will be in low 20’s to high teens. February looks to be a great month for coming to the Keweenaw and getting your riding fix. Winds will be crazy tomorrow, but then die down. So trail conditions will be back up to par and ready for the weekend. All trails in the area are open and being groomed. There is some logging off of Trail 120 (South Freda Trail) so make sure and stay on the trail out there.
Please stay on the marked, groomed trail going thru the Houghton waterfront park area or we will lose access to that part of the trail. It is private property and marked. Don’t be the one to ruin it for the rest of the riders.
Please slow down out there on the trails, there have been lives lost every weekend because of going to fast. It isn’t a race out there. While on the trails, respect others and private property, stay off the ice unless marked safe, and save the drinking for when you are done riding!!

It’s Winter Carnival up here in the Houghton area at the college, Michigan Tech. They make spectacular ice sculptures, there is a parade on the ski hill and fireworks on Saturday night and all kinds of other things going on all weekend. Plenty to do while you are taking a break from the trails.
