Area Report: –
Its impossible to make a blanket assessment about our trails right now. Conditions vary so much. While conditions are far from perfect – our trails are better than what many might think. It comes down to the quality of the snow that comes down – not how much. Many think because the storm one week ago did not give us nearly as much as what they were calling for; that conditions will be poor everywhere – NOT the case. The 4 1/2 inches (+/-) we did get was good snow for the drags to work with. 1 inch of heavier snow is as good as 6 inches of fluff. We also got a few light snow falls here and there to help keep up with traffic. By Sunday night, thanks to heavy traffic, most areas did get pretty beat up. But we groomed Sunday night and straightened most of that out. We are doing what we can with what we have to work with.
As I have been saying; it all comes down to opinions. As I listened to and talked to riders Sunday night, I heard everything from “they are beat up” to “they are pretty darn good”! 4 riders could ride the same trail and there will be 4 different opinions.
Are they pristine and perfect everywhere? NO One thing for sure – they are really getting icy. Close to towns or concentrated traffic areas such as near major intersections – it is snirty. The further north you go – the more snow there has been to work with. Please don’t judge any club’s entire system by the last 1/2 mile you rode getting into town. It is not fair.
So on the average I rate our system as “fair” with many areas a lot better and a few poor areas. If your really fussy and need perfect and pristine – you will not be happy. The good news is that Vilas County is supposed to receive some lake effect today. As usual though – it will be heavier further north.
Icy areas are impossible to pinpoint. So slow down and be ready. Slow down so you can ride another day. Safe riding always works – stupid riding too often hurts!!!
The loggers are currently gone from our trails. But they can start up somewhere else without warning us first. Please – if you run across a logging operation, do not confront the loggers. They have the right to shut trails down to complete their logging. If they get hassled too much – thats exactly what they will do.
