Area Report:   Happy Fall everybody,
No snow yet but they say there's a chance of an inch of accumulation early next week.
Our club has been busy lately getting equipment cleaned up and ready for the up coming season.
Now it's time for trail bushing and new signs
The Polar Riders will have a crew of about 15 people taking vacation time from their jobs in southern Illinois to come up on the 15th of this month to get started on the fall work.
The Polar Riders come up every year at this time and put in a ton of hours helping out our trails.
If any of you are in the area and would like to donate your time feel free to contact Bill Beyer at 715-476-9124. He'll be happy to find you a project.
Or, if you meet anybody from the Polar Riders this winter please buy them a drink and say Thank you.
You can't believe how much their help is needed and appreciated.

There's been some interesting changes in the neighborhood over the summer-
Joyce Bednar from Chuck's Bar is finally get her chance to retire, Jeff and Robyn take over on the 13Th of this month.
Kyle Dibelius, we all know from Around the Corner Pub and Gateway Lodge bought(married)Johnny's Bar right in town.
Make sure you stop by and say hi to these new owners.
Ski-Doo riders, Manitowish Sports has closed, which is why you aren't seeing the web cam in town.
I've added a web cam here at Dear Lodge but it's off line right now, I broke it. That certainly didn't take long.I should have it back up after the weekend, you can find it through my cabin rental web site WWW.FLAMBEAULODGING.COM

The club is in the process of building a web site at WWW.MERCERSNOGOERS.COM
Hopefully we'll be able to keep you updated on club happenings thru the new site
It's supposed to be self editing, but I don't know how yet, and I'll probably break it.

We are having a 50/50 Raffle with some cabin stays including meals and also a Kayak. Nice prizes
Please try to buy all the tickets you can as we have had everything donated including the cost of the ticket printing. It should be a great fundraiser.

That's all I can think of for now
And no, I'm not ready for snow yet.
The two leaf inches has to turn into four and then get cleaned up before we get snow!

Area Report:   Thank you for including Superior & Douglas County in your snowmobiling plans. Unfortunately, recent warm temperatures and sunshine have caused the winter recreation trails to deteriorate quickly, resulting in eroding trail base and unsafe conditions on the snowmobile trails. As of 12:01 Tuesday March 17th all snowmobile and winter ATV trails under the management of the Douglas County Forestry Dept. will close. The “year round” recreation trails (sometimes referred to as the “summer trails”) will be closed temporarily as well, to prevent damage to the trails as well as for safety reasons. The year round trails will reopen for ATV travel once conditions improve. The following “all-season” trails will remain open as long as conditions allow: Gandy Dancer Trail: from MN/WI state line to Patzau Saunders Grade: from MN/WI state line to Schallameir Road parking lot Wild Rivers Trail: from Douglas/Washburn county line to County Highway “Y” Wild Rivers Trail: from North Trailhead parking lot (at CTH “A”) to the Harroun Road The winter recreation trails under the management of the Brule River State Forest have also been closed for the season. For additional information feel free to contact the Douglas County Forestry Dept. at 715-378-2219. Douglas County’s snowmobile and winter ATV trail system bosts nearly 400 miles of groomed trails consisting of the Brule River State Forest Snowmobile Trails, a portion of the Tri County Corridor as well as a large assortment of trails managed by the Douglas County Forestry Department (including some portions of the Wild Rivers Trail, Saunder’s Grade and Gandy Dancer Trail).

The trails are groomed and maintained by local recreational club members & volunteers.

Hello All, time for a weekly update:

We had some warmer weather this weekend and lost a little bit of snow but not enough to hurt the trails at all. Still plenty of snow on them. Some corners may be slick but otherwise they are still in good riding condition overall.

Also, we are getting new snow right now with more expected all week so any snow we did lose is getting replaced right now.

Excellent trails to be found and 3 weeks left to the season. Hope to see you all on the trails.

And here are my usual helpful area links. Let me know if you have any questions or anything you need help with.

Trail Conditions:   Fair

Area Report:   Trails here are still ridable, have a decent base but may have some water spots in low areas. Off trail is pretty good. It rained yesterday, but got very cold last night and is cold today. Snow is in the forecast for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday with colder temps. Actually, there is a storm coming across the Dakotas heading straight for us. If we get 4-6 inches of snow you will be able to get around town as well as ride the trails. Keep checking for updates. Groomers will keep going out daily til the end of March or end of snow, whichever comes first!! Take care when out riding, don't drink and ride, respect others and their property. When you are in town, stop in at Dan's Polaris and say hi to the Trail Goddess. I am always here once winter starts and the coffee is always on (don't worry, I don't make it!). If you are in need of parts, gear, a rental sled, or just some advice, Dan's Polaris is here to help out. As usual, when out riding, don't be a jerk. Ride sensibly, stay on your side of the trail, keep your speed under control and respect private property. Once a private land owners cuts of his property to the trail system, we will never get it back. Be safe, see you on the trails!! Think Snow!!

LATEST SNOW and GENERAL WEATHER:
It's officially Spring...and the forecast bears that out with temps forecast to be in the 40's for the weekend and beyond.

TRAILS and CONDITIONS:
Trails not being groomed, but will officially remain open through March 31st. Most are bare, although there is some snow on a few trails in the woods and in the high country, etc. You'd have a hard time finding them and getting to them, and it's just not worth the effort. Because March generally brings one storm, although there's nothing in the forecast and no indication it's going to happen this year, I will let you know immediately if it does.

Date of Report:   March 10, 2009
Trail Conditions:   Poor
Snow Cover:   minimal inches

Area Report:   All of the future reports will be prefaced with this is "late season riding". Trail conditions can change quickly. The sun is the enemy of the trails now till the end.

The exposed trails are fading fast. Gromming has been suspended unless we receive significant snow. At this point, I would not be out riding. It will take at least 4 inches of snow before I would recommend taking a ride.

Warm up the bus, I think the party is coming to an end.

Now is the time of the year where snowmobilers must use their head and stay on the marked trails. Please do not veer off the marked trail to ride on some "fresh" snow. We must respect the properties of the landowners if we wish to enjoy the miles of trails we currently have.

Please keep an eye out for the groomers. Most of the grooming is done in the evening, but there are times they are out during the day.

Let's all do our part and stay on the marked trails. The lakes are all marked with orange barrels.

If you are not a member of a snowmobile club, please join. All of the local clubs could use the support.

Let's have a fun and safe season.

News and Events:   Many things make snowmobiling great in Bayfield County. From winter’s first flake to spring’s last, the breathtaking beauty of our 433,582 acres of public land and the satisfaction of spending time enjoying the winter landscape with friends and family will take you far from the stress of everyday living to the excitement of a refreshing winter playground. Know your machine's capabilities and don't push beyond them. Remember that speed is not the measure of snowmobiling fun. Ease up on the throttle, especially near other machines, people, trees and animals. Stay to the right of the trail, maintain control, never drink and ride and always yield to grooming equipment and logging trucks.

Trail Conditions:   Poor
Snow Cover:   0 to 12 inches

Area Report:   It looks like Mother Nature is ending the snowmobiling season early again this year. Although there's plenty of snow in some areas here, there's also plenty of areas of bare ground. Friday was the last day that was anywhere near decent. Since Saturday, temps really rose and things started melting. At the U.P. Thunder Riders Appreciation Dinner on Saturday night, our trail boss said that there would still be grooming if we got snow into April. At this point of continuing thawing, it would be a miracle. If we get snow and cold and grooming is possible, I'll let you know or call 906-358-9961 for updates. We hope you were able to get that last sledding trip in before this thaw. :o)

All of us at the Watersmeet Chamber would like to thank you for choosing to visit our area. We know that you have lots of choices and hope that our business owners and fine grooming by our terrific club will bring you back to our area time and time again. We had some great snow this year and had awesome trails for the most part of the winter. The variety of great accommodations, area restaurants, gas stations, snowmobile services, other related businesses, and our dedicated snowmobile club and groomers are here to make your stay a memorable one. We hope you had a wonderful stay and will start planning your 2009-2010 stay now. Thank you all and we hope you'll once again plan to stay where you play. Have a great season and we'll see you when the snow falls again. :o) Thanks much.

I have some facts from our 2007-2008 season for the UP Thunderriders Snowmobile Club in Watersmeet that I thought everyone might be interested in:
Total miles of trail that we groom: 76 miles (71 up to this winter)
Total miles groomed: 16,856
Total gallons of fuel used: 11,257 at a cost of $23,710
Total man hours: 1,686.2

Watersmeet area resorts, hotels, and motels offer a wide variety of accommodations. For information on accommodations in the Watersmeet area, just contact our Watersmeet Chamber of Commerce at 906-358-9961 (also our snowmobile report line), visit our website at www.watersmeet.org, or e-mail us at visit@watersmeet.org. A big thanks to all the groomers, our trail boss, members, sponsors and supporters of the U. P. Thunder Riders Snowmobile Club of Watersmeet, and all those who work so hard to make our trails the very best in the area here. What a great job they do! Many improvements have been made to our trail system throughout the year, and our groomers will be out there every night grooming our trails as soon as we get the snow. A big thank you to all of you who have enjoyed our area in the past and to those who are planning on enjoying it in the future. Watersmeet welcomes you to visit us here at "the Upper Peninsula Gateway to the Northwoods".

News and Events:   The Watersmeet Chamber of Commerce would like to invite everyone to our beautiful "U. P. Gateway of the Northwoods". We have had several beautiful snowfalls in December, and the Grand Marais/Gunflint trail area is truly a winter wonderland.

The shoreline area consists of the North Shore Scenic Drive (Hwy. 61) and the downtown Grand Marais area (lots of restaurants, lodging and shops). Ridgeline is just a mile or so inland, and is where the State Trail runs - spectacular views. End of Trail is the 25+ mi inland area from the Big Lake, Lake Superior.

News and Events:   As of Dec. 30th, the snowmobile trails are being groomed on a regular basis and conditions are good to excellent. The base is currently 12 inches, and the trails are awesome. Caution, though, on some of the lakes. It is possible to ride to the State Trail right from downtown Grand Marais! Call 888-922-5000, and the staff at the Grand Marais/Gunflint Trail Info Center can give you further information. Or, go to www.grandmarais.com for more snow and trail information.

The Grand Marais/Gunflint Trail area has 200 miles of groomed trails and is on the State snowmobile trail. The wilderness scenery is truly beautiful.

Area Report:   The snowmobiling for the year has pretty much come to an end unless we get a big storm yet? It was a great year for Sawyer County and hope everyone makes plans to come back next year! Now we enter the confusing ATV season. First, you can go to the official Sawyer County Snowmobile and ATV map put out by the Sawyer County Alliance on line by just clicking on this Hayward Insert and you’ll see the full map.

A few highlights of the map and to try and summarize: Trails on Federal land in light green areas are closed March 15th to May 1st, trails in the Birchwood area except for the Tuscobia closed on March 15th, Tuscobia Trail #10 does not close in the spring, Trail #11 off of the Tuscobia does not close, Trail #30 from the LCO Casino down to the Tuscobia does not close, trails that are in the Nelson Lake area that are on the roads are open, Trail #63 along the rail road grade north of Phipps is open, all the trails in Seeley Hills that are on town roads such as 77 is open. The only unknown trails are the trails that are not on fire roads/town roads in the dark green area in the Seeley Hills (which is Sawyer County land). The latest is that they will be closed in the spring from April 1st to May 15th unless the Forester decides to shorten it. Hopefully he’ll shorten it to May 1st which is when the Federal trails and Bayfield County open their trails?

Snow Cover:   14-20 inches

Area Report:   Welcome to this site. This is my fifth year compiling the report for Bayfield and west to the Valhalla area in the Chequamegon National Forest. You will find that my report is valid and based on my first hand experience while riding my sled, talking to the area groooming coordinator or going out to measure the snow depth and a visual of the trails.

(UPDATE: TRAILS AND ATV TRAILS ARE CLOSED)

The end of an excellent season of riding is about here. There is a small pocket west of Bayfield and north and NE of Valhalla that will support poor to fair forest road riding. But the temps were in the 55-60 range the last two days and will be 45-50 the next seven days. No snow makers either. Expect bare areas in exposed sections and any plowed areas.

Our ride ended Saturday afternoon in 57 degree temps and mushy conditions. I won't be riding until or if we get more snow. So I will do my best with future reports.

TR13/33 is detoured just south of the PubNGrub east of FR697/TR13 towards Valhalla to FR694. TR13/FR697/FR694 is also plowed and not rideable. Alternate is TR31 to Valhalla and TR 35 to the Sun Bowl.

Forest road conditions will vary including bumpy corners and ruts after the warm temps and freeze. BEWARE OF A SERIES OFF MAJOR BUMPS ON FR437 WEST OF VALHALLA AND FR 252 TO FR690/428.

Remember that forest roads are not groomed, lack stop signs and curve signs, have many unmarked intersections and conditions will vary greatly. In addition, various FR's have been plowed to support logging and other activities.

Anyone looking for quality lodging, consider staying with us at Woodside Cottages and we have availability. We have 13 new cottages complete with gas fireplaces, jacuzzi, kitchens and other amenities for your enjoyment after a day on the trails.

Visit our website by going to the upper left hand corner of this site or go to www.woodsidecottages.com for great pics and info about our cottages. We are currently offering specials on our website.

Be aware that dogsled teams train in the area on the marked dogsled trail system (blue paw print signs) and the forest roads.

Call us at 715-779-5600 for further assistance and lodging needs as well as the Valhalla View at 715-292-7546. The PuBNGBrub now has credit card operated gas pump for your convenience. C-Side on TR13 has gas and food too.

Ride safe and keep to the right!

News and Events:   The Bayfield area has numerous opportunities to enjoy the outdoors year round.

X-Country and downhill skiing at Mt. Ashwabay is just 3 miles south of our cottages. There are 35 km of trails for the beginner to the expert.

There is downhill skiing as well at Mt. Ashwabay on 14 alpine runs and they have snow-making equipment.

The Valhalla area, located 10 miles west of Washburn, supports 30 km of groomed trails in the Chequamegon National Forest.

The mainland sea caves are accessible.

Snowmobile trails have maintained a base in most locations, and the riding is still good. Trails are hard packed and may be icy in some areas. Use extra caution on the lakes.

The west side of the Red Top trail is not being groomed for skiing, which makes it available for snowshoers this year. The Pickerel Lake area is also good for snowshoeing. Crust conditions make for great snowshoeing almost anywhere in the park. Backcountry skiers are exploring new paths on the top of the crust also.

Area Report:   Hi! I’m Stephanie, new manager of the Walleye Lodge & Motel located on the North shore of Lake Gogebic one mile West of Bergland and in the heart of BIG SNOW COUNTRY. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. We have a very large trail system in the Western UP and conditions change sometimes by the hour so always check with your host to get the latest condition updates. We try to stay in touch with the groomers and our guests so we can bring our guests the latest info. These reports will be general for our area.
REPORT: We knew it couldn’t last forever, though we would have liked it to hang on a little longer. 4 days of 40+ temps really had an impact on the entire region. Trails are in poor to good condition with most being poor. Trails are reporting icy and bumpy throughout the entire region. While over the past few days there has been a significant cool down, we just didn’t see the snow we were expecting. Reports are anywhere from 2 inches to 6 but with the wind gusts blowing at between 30-50 mph who really can tell. Any snow that fell in the flat areas was blown away and the big storm we were expecting just didn’t settle in. Not unusual for the area unfortunately. The forecast is still calling for scattered snow showers throughout the week so we will keep our fingers crossed.
We have rooms available if you want to get in some late season riding and we are happy to accommodate you. Stephanie and Alex From the Walleye Lodge Motel. Toll Free 1 866 464 3242 www.walleyelodge.com

Quilters around the world vie to be selected for the Quilt National, organized biennially by The Dairy Barn, Athens, Ohio. The eighty-five examples from the 2007 competition demonstrate that time-honored traditions are thriving and being expressed in new forms as today’s artists rise to meet the challenges of innovative techniques and materials. Quilters must adhere to several imposed rules – but beyond these imperatives, stitching becomes art.
