I have the opportunity to buy (from the relative of a close friend) a 1996 ZRT 600. The sled has about 4000 miles if memory serves me correctly and I've been told it is in very good condition. I have also been told that the owner was very good about the maintenance of it. I have not seen it in person, but my son has, he likes it alot. Given the overall economy, the only reason I'm even considering this purchase is the asking price, $600. I don't really have the money to waste so I want to make sure I will be happy with the sled because I know trying to sell it here in the Detroit area will be tough if I don't like it. Having only owned Ski-Doo in the past, I need to ask...

First and most importantly, Are there any known issues with this sled?
Is it going to be good in the trails or is it more of a straight line ripper?
Since my wife will be riding it also, I've read that it is fairly heavy, any concerns with that?
Since I'm dumb, what is the difference between the ZRT and the ZR?

Any and all info will be GREATLY appreciated here as I know nothing about AC's.

Many thanks to all you Trackers out there for the education on this machine.

Have owned a few back in the day and still work on several of them every year in our shop.

Issues with the sled? None really, pretty solid reliable sled.

Straight line ripper? Yes very much so, one of the fastest 600 class machines in a straight line.

Fairly heavy? Compared to todays machines that may be an understatement.

The "T" in ZRT stood for tripple.

If you plan on pounding that machine thru the ditch or the twisties you'll know it at the end of the day. That machine can take a pretty good beating but it will kinda beat you also.

sounds like a deal to me! Go for it, not much gona beat you out of the hole on that sled if its set up right those 600zrts can go. No counter balancer on the 600s the 800s had it. The center jug is known to fail, but its actually a cheap fix..so if the compression is ok your fine, just watch the plugs. Also, the shocks probably need a rebuild, or you can upgrade to the later suspension for a better ride.

Id buy it, stuff will be wrong with it, and you'll have to put money into it like any old 4k mile sled.

Be aware these sleds get about 10 mpg on a good day, 8-9 mpg if your riding hard.

heavy steering but it is fun to ride. I personaly would not put my wife on it but that is my thought. I had a 97 and it rocked! little clutch work and pics and away it went. Heavy, heavy steering and lots of power is a bad combo for mostr women
