Any wisconsin trails "for sure" open before Dec. 12? Some of the area websites say they open Dec. 1, but I'd like to be sure before I go, since most of the state is closed for hunting till Dec. 10

Its a shame they are not. I mean, the snow will only hold a few dozen sleds, but this is a good start for a base. Saw a few tracks on the way up to Winter tonight. Not quite as much snow as in Point, 10 vs 6, but it is a good start, and it is snowing now.

You really know what's a shame...the Clubs around here didn't even take advantage and pan down the trails. Had that been done, the snow would have more than likely settled in the trail instead of ending up in the ditches. Guess they were all sitting in that fancy club house instead of getting a start on it.

But Howler, if the trails are not open, does it make sense for them to even go out? Maybe owners don't open gates until they officially open? Maybe they don't want to give the impression that they are open? I'm guessing one of the two is the reason.

We groomed our trails on Sunday.
Clubs do get money for grooming, even if the trails aren't open (there are some restrictions on that, but I can't remember). It's nice to get them groomed and let that drifting go to work for you...almost like another snowfall as it fills in the trail.
I think a lot of clubs don't even have all trails marked yet...hard to get out until after deer season. We weren't quite finished marking on Sunday and were still scrambling to re-route some trails and get landowner permission.

440, they typically try to get a jump on trail prep, so that when the season does open, the trails are set as opposed to setting them up the day of opening. The c****** area had marked the trails on Saturday from what I saw on the south end of town.
It would be nice to see those trails filled in with the snow instead of having it blow away as DotheDoo had mentioned. Normally, it seems like that's the case around here. Although to their defense, the trails have only been open about 10 days around here in the last 2 years due to snow conditions.

Around here, from what i've heard we don't open till the 15th, and i haven't seen any groomed trails yet, but what did happen was we got nailed saturday, then sunday we had a bit of a melt, but by 6 it was freezing again, and now we have a wonderful base with very little drifting, so hopefully that helps. i hear 4-6 inches again tonight, we'll see. i'm itching to get on the trails, but unfortunately can't until that dec. 15th open date, so until then i'll just keep doing my snow dance so the trails get a very nice base.

I'm not sure anyone even pays attention to "open" or "closed" around here. It seems as soon as there is snow, people are out because of the lack of snow throughout the season. It would be nice to see a groomer out panning around here to get things set up, but that's a stretch. That usually don't happen 'til people have the trail beat up bad already. I know of a couple of trails that aren't even marked yet. it's gonna be mighty tricky getting a post in the ground now. But hey, by golly it's snowin' out and that's all that matters.

Hi Race79,
Does you club have an online map of your trails? It's only 2 hours to Dickeyville for us and that may make for an easy day trip for us.
Thank,
Mark

I was just thinkin' the same thing there Mark. About 2 hrs from my house, and may make a great day to shake down the XC. Southern Snowtracks invasion anybody? Race and Mrs. Mustard Bucket, I may be callin' ya, lol. If memory serves me right, the Cedar Rapids crew is only about an hour and a half as well. Maize, O2R, TGO, Big Human? What say you?

Howler...Hey a southern invasion sounds great to me...give us a buzz Perry and we can go from there. Darren is going to our club meeting tonight and I have to work until 8:30 but if you want to come down by all means call us up...Anyone is welcome our door is open...claim your bed now or you might have to sleep on the floor but the door is open nonetheless!

Right now, if I make it up for the day it looks like it would be on Sunday. I have to coordinate some plans with work and home. Keep me posted if things start coming together for a SW WI Invasion. It would be great seeing you all again.
Myself, as well as the boys here that I ride with are a little behind this year. We plan to have a sled prepping party Saturday at HenkDawg's Garage for general maintenance and I have a family get-together Saturday evening. They are calling for 3-6" here tonight...we'll see.
Hope to see you all soon!

Are you sure your trails are open? Everywhere I've checked is telling me not till monday because of the extended deer deason. If your sure Grant Co. is open I woudn't mind joining in for a ride this weekend.
you must be getting snow now from the looks of the radar.

Grooming the trails while the extended deer season is on would be a waste of time and money. The 4x4 and hunters go where they please and will tear up any groomed trail. Most forest roads west of Bayfield have been driven on by the 4x4's.

If Race79 says it's a go in Grant County than you can rest assured it's good info. Both he and his wife are solid members of this forum. He will probably chime in here after his club meeting and give us the latest info for his area.
Things can change at any meeting, so I'll wait until Darren posts any late developments before making definite plans. I don't want to screw up anyone while they are out hunting either, there will be plenty time to get riding in this year it looks like.

trails are not open in grant county. there was a interview on the local radio staition in lancaster from the dnr warden and he said that the trails can not open till after this 4 day hunt that is going on now. he was also talking about some trails not even signed yet some where in the county.

I don't know about the DNR interview but our club pres called the Grant County Club Director (Lloyd Runde) last night and he said that we can ride the trails if the clubs are ready but to be considerate and close gates if we open them, etc. This morning we spoke with members of several area clubs and they say their trals are open???

and close gates if we open them, etc.
That surprises me... (not in anyway to say your trails are not open or such :))... thats a HUGE no-no up here to open a gate and ride the trail if its closed gated, not to mention big fine if caught.
I too was under the impression it was state wide with that extended deer
hunt that trails couldnt open til after Dec 9th.
Anyhow.. good riding Race79, wishin for the 12th here when our open..
til then its the UP.:D

Yeah I don't know what to think either....It is conflicting info I guess...I know a bunch of people from a club by our house that are planning on riding tonight because Lloyd said they could if their trails are ready.
The gate thing down here is different...it is because we ride across land with cattle and the landowners have not had a chance to move them out yet so they just ask that we open then close the gates...not that uncommon for our area.
Enjoy the UP and your new seld!!!

According the DNR, the extended deer season does not affect the state trails. The trails system is OPEN. However, some counties may have chosen to close their trails and some landowners may not allow anyone on their easement or section of a trail. Thus some gates may be closed. DO NOT go around closed gates!!
It is recommended you wear orange if you ride.

I guess that it'll be around Race79 and Mrs. Mustard Bucket's house, lol. There's a bar right near their place that may work for dropping, but Race may have a better idea. Their back yard, so I'm going with whatever they suggest.

Just got off the phone with Howler. He said he will be here between 9 and 10 tomorrow morning. Let's plan to meet at Daniel's Bar in Kieler. If you are coming from IL/IA you will come in on Hwy 61/151 and take the Kieler exit, at the stop sign take a left, at the next stop sign, take a right (this is a frontage road). At the next stop go left and it is the first turn to the right, go all the way back. It is a bar and motosports store in one. If you are coming from out of state don't forget about your WI pass. You can go an extra few miles and get that first if you want. What you will do is instead of taking the Kieler exit you will take the Dickeyville exit, at the stop go left and follow that until you see the first gas station on the right (donnie's tire and auto) they sell the passes. If you are coming from WI on 61/151 (to get to Daniel's) you will take the Kieler exit, at the stop go right and take the first turn to the right. If anyone comes early and wants to eat breakfast Daniel's has the best around...very cheap and lots of it!!! We have about 8 or so inches of snow right now and we are supposed to get more tonight/tomorrow. Some clubs have been grooming but we have not been out yet. We will try to get more info from guys that have been out and post later. Let us know who is coming and we will PM you our phone numbers.
Match: I PM'd you our numbers this morning.

Just got back from the maintenance party we had down here. 10 hours of working on sleds and trailers. Cleaned the carbs in two of my sleds. Put on new gas tank with electronic fuel to replace the manual gas cap one that fell apart inside the old tank and new hyfax on the RMK. HenkDawg replace the brakes and hubs on the front axle of the 4 place. Seemed like everything we did today fought us every step of the way.
While checking over the clutch saw that my clutch spring is broke. Must have happen on the last ride last year. So with a broken clutch I will not be making the Sunday ride tomorrow in Kieler. I noticed my front shocks are leaky also. I am really bummed. I was really looking forward to seeing you guys.
Anyone happen to know what the color of the factory spring in a 2000 RMK would be. It looks to be beige or a dirty white color. I am off to eBay to try to find a new clutch spring.
