Hello, now I'm looking at a different sled and was wanting the opinions of the people on here. I'm looking at a 2002 Yamaha Viper ER 700 and was wondering if anyone on here happens to own one and could tell me something about them (i.e.- handling, reliability, & fuel economy) Thanks, Jolly.

It's a fast sled, decent trail qualities, could use a bit more suspension, could use a bit more lug on the tack. Overall, a nice ride.

Thanks for the input guys...m scott, is the thing you can't say a good thing or a bad thing?
According to a dealership I talked to this, particular Viper is supposed to be the luxury type version with better suspension than the regular Vipers, as it also has electric start and reverse. Thanks, Jolly.

My friend has one. it gets pretty good gas milage, and can run with pretty much anything. Like howler said, a little more aggressive track would help it out alot. It has proven to be very durable.

I picked up an 04 viper ER. Great looking and sounding sled. Stock set up you should get 12-16mpg depending on your tumb action. More than enough power to get you in trouble. Suspension leaves alot to be wanted for: can up grade shocks as well as skid. You will need/want to upgrade the track: The 1.25 ripsaw under mine is awesome.
02 had some known issues/recalls. do a search for total Yamaha for more details and specfic problems to watch out for. Make sure to clean the reeds and power valves as they will rob you of your power.

I used to ride with 2 guys that had 2002 Vipers.
Strong things-
Great gas mileage, sipped the fuel.
Easy on the belt.
Used little oil.
Great power with the triple pistons.
Very, very realiable.
Handled pretty good for their time.
Weak things-
Compared to today sled designs, the ride is not near as good.
If no electric start, can be tough to pull over in very cold mornings.
Overall though, a very solid sled for its time in all areas of performance, mileage and dependability.

My wife and I have 2002 Viper ER's. We like them alot! They are excellent on fuel, Dependability have been fantastic, and as far as starting, they turn over quite a bit after sitting for the summer, but start quick after the first of the season. We had the yamaha shock upgrade done and it made a nice difference. Im not sure there are much better sleds out there for the money.

If the 2002 is like the 03 that I own, you will be very happy with it. The dealer told me to take some of the spring tension off of the rear shock and that helped alot with the ride. You will not be dissapointed.

If you ride down in iowa it should be ok, if u ride in up or northern wisconsin prepare for the "why the hell would that flat lander drive that crap" stares. i would buy a nice arctic cat t660 touring ;)
