View Full Version : West Yellowstone/Island Park UPDATE Febuary 22 2010

By now, 65 percent of the year’s snowpack should be on the ground, but most of the mountains are woefully behind normal accumulation.

Instead of the normal track that brings big, wet storms originating in the Pacific Northwest barreling toward the mountains, storms this winter are breaking off from big systems to the south and clobbering the plains instead. We are way below normal snowpack with terrible trail conditions and high avalanche danger.

Streets in town are melting down to pavement in places. The town slackers are taking snow from the alleys and trucking it to the Sno-Cross site in order to try and create a track of some kind for March.

Island Park Idaho is even worse with rocks and stumps sticking through causing heavy sled damage. Grooming is very limited on weekends only. The streets are slushy, down to pavement in the day and black ice at night. 10 degress below zero at night this week has freeze dried what little snow we did have in town.

The streets will be dry for Sno-Cross in March so plan on trailering your sleds to the event...if there is one. Those of you who came up here for Presidents day weekend saw for yourselfs that my reports are spot on. Looks like the end is near for this year. Heavy talk of plowing the roads in Yellowstone next winter. See you next year.
