No extra hunt in Vilas County this year so.......After the 9 day hunt going on right now & the muzzleloader season that starts after the 9 day hunt we can snow conditions permitting open the trails. The target date is the 9th or 10th.
Stay tuned!

There is no antler-less hunt in Vilas. There is in Oneida, so BoBoen may not be able to open all their trails. But Vilas can open. There isn't any usable snow to talk about anyway.

Gates opening or not comes down to our contracts with land owners. The DNR is our biggest land owner. The contract always states that no gates will be opened until 1 day following the final day of any gun hunt. For this year, that day was stated as December 9th since the final day of any gun hunt is today (8th). Then we need a full day to be sure all gates from all 11 clubs are open. So this year, the trails open on the 10th.
Since this is the case with the contracts and the DNR said we could open gates on the 9th, I think the DNR would have known if there were any extended hunts. But truthfully, at this point, I wish we were not opening until at least the 15th. There is nothing worth riding on yet.
There is barely enough and in some areas not enough to bother panning. What I have panned so far has partially filled a couple of ruts and holes, but there isn't much left afterwords.
