View Full Version : New Summer Project - 18' Trailer
Maize

Well, I have my 3 major projects lined up for the summer. I am going to tear down my Blade sled and do what I should have done the first time. Instead of painting the tunnel, I am going to be powercoat the chassis and remaining parts. It will also be getting a new custom wrap from Jordan at ArticFX.
I will also be (finally) getting the stereo equipment in the Tacoma. It is getting the front windows tinted, a stripe down the middle, leather seats and seat heaters.
My third project is a trailer I bought. I have been looking for this specific type of trailer for over 2 years, now.
It is a 1997, R&R 18' clam shell trailer. I got it from an insurance company. Someone hit a deer with the front right corner. I picked it up in Oak Brook, Il (outside of Chicago) a few weeks back. I took it to Black River Falls, WI on my last trip. The trailer pulls like a dream behind my Tacoma.
It does need a lot of work. I will be putting two new axles under it, new electric brakes on both axles, new marine grade decking, stainless tiedowns, a new lift system, new aluminum rims and tires and reskinning the sides after I straighten out the frame. It will then get all new wiring and LED lighting inside and out.
It will also be getting a new A-MAIZE-ING KUSTOMS graphic package for the whole trailer.
I have all the parts lined up and just need to get the project going. It will have to wait until the weather warms up.

Got confirmation the axles were being made by manufacturer.
My tire/wheel packages were shipped out today.
I called Floe today. I talked to the tech guy. They don't sell the parts direct to the public. I called two Floe dealers in Iowa, and neither of them wanted to help me.
So I called back and spoke with the tech. He gave me a place that he knows sells rebuilding parts.
So I called them. I ordered the following stuff:
The front and rear gull-wing hinges.
The front and rear T-handles with keys, double control with lock rods
The upper and lower edges with inserts.
The upper and lower weatherstripping.
The front brush gard to keep snow out from front of door.
The front and rear door center trim with insert.
I spent 2 hours last night searching for stuff that would work. I couldn't find anything so I though why not just get the stuff directly from Floe and be done with it.
I will post pricing when he gets back to me tomorrow.

thought I would update the pricing, things have changed since the orginal list
I got a call back from AVM, they don't make this particular lift, so I canceled the order. So the $80 each with $12.90 shipping. Total cost $332.90 goes back into the pot.
The side sheets I am getting from next door neighbors sign company. I can get a 5' X 10' .030" black/natural sheet of aluminum for $87 each. 5 sheets will run $435. I found that by going with .040" black on one side and white on the other, the price is only $64 each. So that adds $115 back to the pot.
I got the LED lighting from ebay. Yellow and Red side marker lights were $3.96 each. There are 8 yellow, 10 red (with the tripple set on top and bottom as indicator lights) for $71.28.
I also got the LED tail lights from the same place. They are 10 LED lamps. A set of four of them ran $24.95.
I am also putting reverse LED lamps on the inside of the trailer. I got 6 of the 10 LED lamps for the inside. Those ran $7.95 each for $47.70.
I also got a LED license plate light for $7.95
Total for all the lamps came to $151.88 with $16.75 shipping for a total of $168.63.
I still have to get a new wiring harness made, get new locks for the front access door, get new pins and lanyards for the pins, redo the ramp, get new chains and get the side company logo.
That comes to $2396.45 for what I have ordered to date. I paid $1800 for the trailer. That comes to $4196.45. I always alot about 10-15% for unexpected stuff. That leaves a grand total in the trailer of $4825.92 total investment.
I have to head out to Storm Steel this coming week to get aluminum to make the new lightweight ramp. That is going to run me about $80. I am then going to TIG the whole thing together myself.
So taking the $4196.45 and subtracting the $332.90 and $115 back out. That comes to $3748.55, the add back the $422 for the Floe parts, and 3 more sheets of aluminum at $192 and total investment comes in at $4362.55. I am still within my thoughts of doing this thing for under $5000. I still have a cushion of $637.45

I just got the wheels/tire combos from UPS. They look awesome. I will get some pictures a little later.
The guys are just finishing up the new roof. She-La would not allow me up on the roof with my new knees, so I had to hire that out.
I dropped Olivia off to have her spring sampoo and cleanup.
I got the new 7" brake hubs in the mail and stripped down and out to Cool Concepts to be powder coated.
I got the new Dexter 7" electric brake setups. I got those stripped down and out to Cool Concepts for powder coating.
I got the in-floor tie-downs. I got 10 of them. I am going to use them instead of the E-Z slide system from Triton. The slide was like $160 per side for an 18' section.
With using this as a 3 place, I won't be able to position them exactly over the sectons anyway. So I am going to put 5 different tie-down positions in the trailer. I have those broken down and out to be powder coated. I also have backing plates to mount under them for support.

I had a lot of part getting powder coated and on order.
I didn't get the pictures of the door support stays, but I got 4 of them, with 13mm ball joints and nuts.
I got the 10 hold downs and plates, 4 brake backing plates and 4 hubs back from powder coating.
I also got back from Redneck Trailer Supply in Hampton, IA. They made the axles to order.
I got them home and they measure up perfectly, complete with E-Z lube axles.
I got the new roof on the house and paid for, so placed the order for the Floe trailer stuff.
The aluminum tubing and sheeting is at the neighbor's shop. All that is left is the marine plywood to order.

Just an update:
I have been having trouble getting ahold of my Floe Trailers guy. Found out he was on vacation. So I got all the Floe officially ordered up today.
Over the weekend, I got with my neighbor. He is going to do some checking see about getting 5' wide sheets so the front and rear doors will have the Floe style seam down the middle.
I measured up the door frames and ordered up my 1" square tubing from him.
All that is left is the marine decking.
I am looking for a 1/4" thick, rubber matt that is 4' wide my about 3' deep.

I got some more stuff for the trailer in the mail this weekend.
I got the tail lights. I will have one set mounted up high, and on set mounted down low.
I also got the two from front marker lights that are going on the front of the lift door.
I got the 3 LED center light for the bottom.
I also got the 4 lift stays for the doors.
I am just waiting on the white LEDs for the interior and all of that is here.
Also, just waiting on the delivery of the 5' x 10' aluminum sheeting and I will be ready to roll.
I have decided to do my own coating for the decking. I am going to be using SEM Pro-Tex truck bed lining.
5 sheets of 3/4" x 4' x 8' marine grade plywood was $96/sheet. That comes to $480.
The SEM stuff is $186 for materials. It cover 120-125sq ft. That is 10mm thick. I am only going to put it about 5mm thick on this ply wood. The gun I can get for about $40 from Eastwood. Regular pressure treated 3/4" plywood is $29.99 per sheet.
So doing it this way will run about $375.95 for everything.
The Line-X guy wanted $70 each for the axles to coat. I should have enough to coat them, also. That was another $140 for them.

Things are slowly moving forward with the trailer. Not real worried about it as I won't really get started on this until after the sled is finished up.
I did get the aluminum sheeting ordered up. I decided to skin the whole thing. I ordered 14 sheets of 5' X 10' aluminum sheeting with black on one side and white on the other.
I also ordered up the 1" x 1" X 24' for the frame work.
I also bought a truck bed liner gun off ebay for $18.96 shipped to my house. I will be applying SEM Pro-Tex liner to the plywood sheeting.
I did get the axles back from Advanced Blasting so they are ready for primer.

I didn't get a whole lot done on the trailer this weekend.
I did haul both sleds to the car show on Saturday in it...MAN, that is heavy to lift even with no snow on it. What was R-N-R trailers thinking when they made that thing?
Anyway...that will all be remedied shortly.
As stated, had the car show on Saturday, so that pretty much blew the day.
Today I had to tear out the old sink and faucet in the kitchen and install a new sink, faucet, drains and garbage disposal.
Then I had to put a new light and ceiling fan in the bedroom..so today was pretty close to being shot.
Last week, I got the 30" X 44" access door from the guy on ebay. I tore it all down and got the frame to Cool Concepts for powdercoating.
I got that back this weekend and did manage to at least get the outside frame back together.
I just have to finish up a customers tunnel extension and edge coolers and it be all good to go on the trailer, full-tilt.
Here is the door before I tore it all down:
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/1570/trailerdoor.jpg
Here is the door with the outer skin torn off. It was a white. bumpy fiberglass. I will just cut a piece of .030" that we are using for the skin and put on the door so it will match the outside of the trailer.
http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/2926/10june2.jpg
It was epoxied to the steel frame so I had to chisel it off with a wood chisel. Here is what is left of the door skin:
http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/3170/10june3.jpg
Here are the outer frames and inner frames back from Cool Concepts:
http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/7395/10june1.jpg
Here is the outer frame complete. I have to wait and do the inner frame when the door panel is skinned.
It has a really nice lock, not only the level locks, but it also has a dead bolt. $142 shipped to the house.

http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/9761/teardown7.jpg
I will be rolling the remainder of the sheeting off and laying out the cuts for the front and rear doors.
I was going to widen this trailer to make is 101", instead of the advertised 99".
My old 2 place is 101" wide outside to outside. If you lift up the cover, this trailer measures 100.5" inside to inside. When you take into account that the metal is about 1/8" wide on the old trailer, that is only about 1/4" difference.
I am going to be doing something like raising up the framing for the top.

I had ebay bucks left over for 26.58, so total cost shipped to my house came to $191.42. They were $109 each including shipping. I got two kits to make sure I have it plenty thick.
One kit covers 125ft/sq.
I am also covering the axles with this stuff. I won't need a barrier between the aluminum frame and the steel axle perch this way.

Got a TON of structural work done today.
I didn't want to spend all time building a killer top, and then find out something was wrong with the frame. It is afterall a 1997 trailer and was totalled by an insurance company.
We put the straps on it and hoisted the whole thing in the air so we could get a good and inspect everything. Overall, it looked pretty good with a couple of stress cracks in the front.
The front V is made of VERY thin (a smidge bigger than a 1/16th of an inch. Once you get to the structural frame it was made of 3/16".
We ground down the ends of the rails so we could put another 1/8" 3" X 3" piece under the front V. We tied that into the center piece and reinforced that section. Tomorrow, we are ripping up the front of the deck so we put another 3" x 3" section cross way.
We are then starting on the top.
We also figured out where and how the fuel tank is going to be mounted and how we are mounting it.
Here is the trailer in the air for inspection:

Well, just a couple of updates:
We got both axles cut off tonight. The bottoms of the bolt heads were completely rusted so the wrench just spun on the head.
We ended up cutting them off with a sawsall.
When we put the fuel tank up, the guy did add the 1.5" for the ribs on top of the tank. He failed to mention that part, and we can't move the crossmember because of where the seam is for the sheeting.
We we are going to notch out the crossmember and box the notches in and it will be good to go. There are only 4 ribs so it will be fine.
I got the door handles, fuel gauge and main electrical cut-off in the mail today. I got the brake controller, the 100' 4 wire strand and then new heavy duty 7pin connector.
The speakers should be here tomorrow or Wed and the LED flood lights should be here before the weekend.
Here are some pictures of the sheeting we are using. The stuff is called Ecopanel. The sheets of aluminum actually sandwich polymer (it is the same stuff they make recycled milk jugs with).
Here you see the com*****on with a sheet of 0.043" that we were going to use. It is only marginally heavier and a 5' x 10' sheet with gloss black on one side, and white on the other is only about $18 more than the 0.043" stuff. It is going to take 12 sheets so the total cost is only about $226 more.

We got that last engineering feat done today.
We made the impact shield/mount for the fuel cell today.
The shield goes completely under and onto the front and rear of the tank.
There is a 3/8" closed cell foam spacer between the tank and shield.
The shield is made from 0.090".
In order to get it to fit, we had to cut into the frame. We then cut one side out of a 2" X 2" tubing and welded that into frame after cutting channels in each hole.
We then welded in 1.75" X 1.75" tubes between the scallops to support the tank.
We then bent a lip on the shield, bent that all up and mounted the tank in position.
We then mounted the axles in place.
Here is everything mounted up.

Well....I just got home from the shop...got a lot done today.
I got the axles cleaned up, the brakes put back together, got the backing plates on, got the hubs on with bearings, set the bearings, adjusted the brakes and put the rims/tires on.
We then went around and did all the finish welds, ground the outside flat to accept the panels, rounded off the rear corner and got the mid-section panels fit:

Built in fuel cell.......SWEET!!! How many gallons?
Wow! I thought I had this project up to date. Oct was a zoo with trying to get the trailer done on time and the Toronto Snow Show, the ISSA convention.
Sorry madam, I don't mean to be rude and not answer.
The fuel cell is 35 gallons

The Snow Show is over. The trailer hauled 3 sleds, 1000 posters and 300 T-Shirts to Toronto, Canada and back.
It pulled like a dream. I got 13mpg on the way up, and 10 on the way home. We had the wind with us on the way there, and fought it on the way home.
Here are the finished trailer. The graphics are not complete, and not the way I want them. But the decals were taking too long to peal apart. We put the finishing touches on the trailer at 3:15a of Friday morning, then turned and burned to Canada at 9a that same morning.
I also still have to put the Nitrous refill station in and the shelving and storage for oil.
Here is the progress up to the finish:
Here we are putting the Alumapanel on:

We just threw some graphics on it for the trip to Canada. So we still need to whip up the final wrap. We put the finishing touches on it at 3:15a on Friday morning, and left for Canada at 9a.
I also still have to finish up the ramp, the nitrous refill station and put the locks on the bins. I also have to put the rear door actuators in place.
Here is the completed trailer:

I kind of built with the concept of getting stuck in a storm. You could put a couple of cots in it, fire up the generator, plug in a heater, turn the radio on or plug in a DVD player and ride the storm out.

I got tired of poking my hands on the previous owner's jury-rigged trailer ramp.
So...instead of modifying that old POS, I learned from my past mistakes....I am making a new one from scratch.
The tail piece will be on a hinge type system and fold back over the main portion of the ramp. My entire driveway is concrete so in order to keep from having to get a running start and launch into the trailer. A bad combination with a 54" roof line. LOL
Here is the old POS ramp. It is made from 1/4" aluminum angle and square tubing. The rest is 3/4" plywood. When it gets wet, (even dry) it weighs a ton and is very awkward when trying to move, especially with the screws sticking out the bottom of the wood.
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/6449/ramp1u.jpg
Here is the layout of the new ramp. I do need to make the swivel for the base unit and get another set of plastic runners.

Here are the flap I have. They are hinged and drop over the edge of the deck to prevent tearing the corners up:

Thanks, but I am more the Blaster, than the masterr past...LOL
Sorry, a little Thunder Dome humor.
I got almost all of the decals on but the temp dropped and the wind is blowing about 40-50mph here so I couldn't finish them.
I got the rest of my decals from Howler. I got the manufacturer of snowmobiles, shock manufacturers and my pricing put on the trailer.
