My 96 XCR is doing the same thing. I washed the belt with dishsoap and cleaned the sheaves with glass cleaner before operating the sled this year. I had never done anything to them any other year. Also, the belt is so tight, it's hard to start the sled, and it moves forward a little when you pull it over. I thought that was strange since its the same belt that has been on the sled for the last 2-3 years, with no trouble. The sqealing is only at idle after the belt is warmed up, and then every time I stop or take off from a stop.

Pull the clutches and inspect wear, more then likely your buttons, ramps, and or bushings are shot, check both the primary and seconday.
It isn't very cheap but the sled will run a lot better not to mention it should resolve the squeel. You need to keep trac of all the shims so that you put it pack in the same place as it was.
i would try a different belt if you have one. they can shrink over the summer and it would be too tight and it would make it squeal.

make sure the belt is adjusted to correct tension and is there should be a hair of movement on secondary with belt off to correct alignlment.....also r u sure squeel coming from belt...my srx last year had a squeel at idle and my flywheel ended up coming off...

it was just the belt, we checked the numbers on the belt and the guy who sold it to my dad gave him the wrong one, and it was too tight, we put the old one on and it worked great... and they sold the sled
