View Full Version : got some gps ?s
I don't get out much, but seems to me that trail maps could be downloaded into gps receivers. Is this true, or was I just having on of my moments? Anybody refresh me?

Hmm, interesting concept, but i believe all of the travel info you can get on an "in-vehicle" GPS is done thru satellite?? Not sure trails would qualify as info to make available by satellite. Plus a lot of trails change a little from year to year, not sure how things would keep up. Who knows, maybe someday. On the other hand, it would be nice to be able to see the nearest road if ya got in a pinch while out on the trail, that would be do-able provided you have a general idea of where you are.
How sweet would that be to glance down and see how far you are from anywhere?

Your GPS will tell you when you are in the middle of nowhere not only the roads in the area but train tracks rivers etc... I lost my Garmin Rhino last winter but I always had it with me and used the bread trail on it. I had a lot of rides programed in it so when we rode that area again I knew where we had been before. Any way it may not show trails as stated earlier but it will show you where you are and any land marks that are near by.

I have all of Michigan's trail maps downloaded onto my GPS and it works great. I am getting a new program (hopefully on Tuesday) that will tell the trail number and also show what land is private and which is public.

TST24, What type of GPS unit and software are you using? My Garmin E-Trex Vista/Topo US combo shows most of the trails but no numbers. That would be very nice!

Minnesota, Michigan U.P., New York, Wisconsin, Ontario, and Washington

Got a new Garmin. Not sure of it's capabilities yet.
Been alone with her for a few weeks. Her name is Shaniqua Rashim Alzwanda.
I call her Shanny for short.
My speedometer doesn't work on the new, and improved Arctic Bat. A sensor may be the problem. A new one has been ordered.
In the mean time, snapping Shanny to the winshield is cool. Lets me know my speed.
As far as maps are concerned, it's still new to me. First time trying it on the trails.
Much more to learn about Shaniqua.
Not too smart on the old computer gig. I went to that site n tried to get some maps, musta done something wrong, cause I didnt get any. If I did get maps, what would I need to get them transferred to my new garmin?? Pretty sweet deal for driving, just wish it would do the same thing for the trails. How much of the trail system in northern wi. is avalable??

It depends on which Garmin Model you have and if you have MapSource software from Garmin. If you don't have MapSource these are the instructions you need. You also must have a USB Data Cable for your GPS Unit.

Scott...Still nursing myself from last nights OD on Bud Light. I have a Garmain GPSIII+. I do have Garmin's MapSource Topo, City Navigator v8, and US Lakes/Fishing Hot Spots but my unit has very limited memory capablities that I rarely load those maps into the GPS. I assume you are wanting info on up loading to your Rino 530? I'll try to borrow HenkDawg's Rino in the next day or so and do some playing. Did you read through these instruction for MapSource?

Can the same info be used on a nuvi200? Its made for an auto, and has an sd port. I havn't dug around too much to see what it can do as I just got it this week.

Not sure 2doo. Both MapSource and the SendMap methods worked on my GPSIII+. I would think if you have a USB data cable for your unit it would work, but again I am not familiar with your unit.
Looking on the Garmin site at this link https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=9160 it says under the specs tab that it has the ability to add maps, but who knows if you can add any maps or just Garmin proprietary maps? I looked on their website for a users manual but could only find a "ready, set, go" quick start for your GPS.
Sorry I wasn't much help.

Match whats the secret to getting the trails to overlay the city navigator topo??
Scott,
Coming home from Up North we stopped in Prairie Du Chien at Cabela's on Saturday afternoon. Parusing through the Bargain Cave I found a Garmin Rino 530 sitting on the shelf with a $136 price tag on it. Asked the clerk to take a look at it and he said he thought there was a box for it in back. He came back with the box and everything was in it. So I am the proud owner of a Garmin Rino 530(1st Generation, non HCx), but for $136 I couldn't pass it up!
Hopefully I can play with it in the next few days and be able to answer your question.

2doo,
I noticed this posted on the GPSSledMaps Website
(http://www.gpssledmaps.com/general_info/faq.php)
UPDATE: A few people have written to say they've successfully used my maps on Garmin Nuvis, such as the Nuvi 200. If you use my maps on a Nuvi or StreetPilot, let me know.
You may have to do some studying of your manuals and the instructions at the website, but it looks like it may work on your unit.
I got a geek 2 maybe do it for me. I hope it works. Thanx 4 the info

woohoooo i figured it out. Just had to have all the maps loaded in the map names the list on the left. then hit up load and it works when you look at the gps unit. would be nice to see it on the computer. To bad i am not up north to play with it even more.
Saweeeeet! Got all of the up, all of wi, and half of min. loaded on my gps. Tried it out over the weekend and loved it. Got to work on some fancy mounting hardware 4 the sled and I will be in business. I need to add that it came in very handy especially early in the trip. I came around a corner and found a sled stuck in a tree with a woman holding the driver. Something I had hoped I would never find, but with the gps and a cell I was able to let the medics know exactly where we were. if you're out there, hope you're doing better and good luck to you!!! and good job to the mercer rescue, very speedy response!!
