I've got a 2001 Polaris 600 with a chain case starting to leak from the back side---probabaly the seal behind the bearing. SOmeone told me to stop using the synthetic chain case lube and instead use the non synthetic chain case Lube. I see Polaris does not sell the regular chain case lube--it's all synthetic---but Yamaha does. What do you guys think? WIll it work to stop the leak since it's a little thicker---or it a waste of time? ALso--is it safe to use the non synthetic? To replace that seal would be a ton of work though!

It may seem like a lot of work but you will be suprised it can take as little as 15 minutes - 1hr depending on skills and such.

I would definelty recoomend pulling the case and replacing the gasket and any leaking seals, as a failure in the case can lead to a LARGE bill.

i would change the seal and i would change the bearing because when it starts to leek usually means the bearing is bad. as for the oil use what the manufacture says to use

Hi, thanks for the info, have you ever done this job on a Polaris in the 2001 year area? if so--gosh it looks messy in there. I fix a ton of things on the sleds, but this looks like a big job. Does the bearing in there need to be pulled or will it slide right off?

Not on a polaris but i just did my chaincase during my track change, and the chaincase part is about 1 hr, to pull the case clean the old gasket Simply tap the bearig out (remove any snap rings that may be holding the bearing in) gently and evenly tap the new bearing(s) in. Spin and make sure it turns the same as it did before you tapped it in. Bolt back half back on the sled, Reset chaincase tension (fingertight then back 1/4 turn by most stds) turn with track in the air and see if you get any binding on the chain etc...

Re-install othercover w/ new gasket torque bolts to spec (check manual or someone might have the polaris specs) Fill with chaincase oil and your done.

The Yamaha Oem uses reg. 80-90 gear lube which the only time you'll notice a difference between a semi/synthetic is with the xtreme cold... If your seal is leaking there's no miracle cure unfortunately it just needs to be replaced...
