My uncle , my son and myself went to Bergland MI. Friday 4:00 AM from my uncles house in Mauston Wi. and sledding by 11:00 AM in Bergland & on up. My son rode the 2003 Polaris super sport 550 Fan. Up to Porcupine Mt. ect. It ran a ok for 4 hrs but at the end of the ride he said it was running a little rough.Staurday started to Houghton and my son said he smells something burning and backfired 2 times after 10 mi. so we checked it out, A-ok,the belt was just warm we were burning oil so I got on it for 15 mi and the sled ran great but when i stopped and hit the kill switch the sled tried to shut off but would'nt then i hit the key and it still would'nt shut off until i gave it some throttle then it killed, we started it with no problem but it would not respond to the kill switch and or the key, it would just keep running until you gave it some gas. we rode to Mass city (20 mi.) We gased up with super ul thinking it would clean something up, 15 more miles and it blew something, rod, crank, piston? it seased up, pulled the plugs then was able to pull it and put the plugs in & it started and clanged alot. We towed it back to Mass city picked it up and drove back home to Mauston and then back to IL where i live (late night) all on Saturday. I wonder what made the motor go?
I guess if all three of us could'nt ride then no one rides but the 170mi we did get in was fantastic and the little things wont get us down. I have been riding with my uncle since I was 12 years old, Im 48 and he's 66 and still the coolest dude with the coolest sled (his CAT). And my 18 yr old son thinks the same. Thanks uncle Don !!:D:D

Well it was more then likely a crank bearing . How many miles on it ? To many things to list on why they go . I would do a compression test and check out the fan its self .
