Hobby Mechanics, Do they still exist??

I've been really frustrated with the service I've gotten from our local sled dealer's shop this fall. Can anyone recommend someone who works on sleds because they "want to?" In other words, is it still possible to find a guy to do quality work on a sled, not because he has to to make a living, but because he wants to as a side job for some "fun money"? Anyone suggestions for the south central WI area. (Plain, WI) I'd drive an hour for a good reliable mechanic. The dealer is making $80/hr these days, and not doing a very thorough job. I'd like to find someone for $40-$50/hr that I can trust to do it right the first time. Do you guys know what I mean? Any thoughts?

I have a good friend who used to work as a polaris mechanic. He is good with stuff, not a hack, he went to school for small engine stuff. Got sick of the dealer BS. Works for a local city doing there small engine stuff.

How far away from edgerton are you?

Living in Plain, WI. Typically I'd go to Richland Center, but I'm just tired of giving them my money for half-azzed work.

That sounds like me, I do plenty of work on sleds every fall/winter. I don't do major stuff like rebuilds and I stay away from electrical. some crash repairs and typical tune up stuff. I know what you mean about dealers, I took one of mine in to get the electrical system checked to find out if I need a voltage regulator or a stator. They check it and tell me that it could be either one. I thought to myself"no kidding, i already knew that". They just want a steady flow, in and out, thats where the money is.

Yes, they do exist but are not easy to find. I have a guy in my area who just rebuilt the upper end of my brothers quad engine for $25.00! And I know I didn't get ripped off on the parts because I ordered and paid for them myself, then had them shipped to his house. He used to be a factory backed Yamaha moto-x rider and he and his dad wrenched on his stuff for his entire career. The quad runs like a raped ape now.
