whats on your sled picks or paddles?
I've always had picks up till now, I just changed over to a rip saw trac and I'm not sure I'm going to like it witout picks but I no longer have room for them.

144 picks not enough room under my sled for a tall paddle track
Lugs only baby, no studs no more had 296 (i didn't install them) down to 144 and sled never felt as good as with the taller lug studless beauty that is on there now![]()
With all that snow you're gonna get, picks won't get a bite anyhow. lol I have a ripsaw on mine and was surprized how good it hooks, but then I put 96 down the middle anyhow just in case.
I'm running a Ripsaw with 144 down the center on my XC. I've found that you have plenty of clearance after you take the first jump and bottom out the sled, lol. All kidding aside, the ripsaw rocks in a lot of deeper conditions where the .875 would have just sunk. However, I still would not get rid of the studs for anything involving trail riding. The benefits are too great.
You need to decide where the majority of your riding takes place and go from there.
Personally I do not like studs, would never use them and never buy a sled that has had them. Could see the benefit of studs on a uphill ice packed trail, or stopping, (probably at that time though, you are riding to fast for conditions and over your capabilities anyway) but honestly I have never had a situation in 35 years of riding that I could not get where I needed to go. The ripsaw track is always the way to go.
Defiantly studs, especially in vilas county where I ride. You can't and I mean can't get up some of those hills when they get icey. I have seen people try, after the 3rd time they turn around and go the way they were coming.
I don't care what height of paddel or type of track, rubber is no match for an icey hard pack trail. Even a ripsaw won't dig through it. My brother bought one(ripsaw 1.25), works like crap he needed studs. Plain and simple studs are there to not get you into hairy situations.
Picks. I tried an unstudded 1.25" Ripsaw and it didnt hook up worth a darn on icy hills and corners.
I had to get a run up every hill and I pretty much drifted around every corner.
On ice or hardpack its unsafe if you dont have studs and I personally wont ride without studs.
I run 144 studs on my 600(99 zrt600) and 192 on the 800(96zrt800) with the .85 track I use woodys .92 gold diggers, and run 9" carbide roetin runners up front on both. This set up works great on both for me since I ride mostly on trails
