    '97 SX700 Problems

This noise just started this season, it is a clunking noise at speeds lower than 30mph. When you accelerate or when you grab the brakes the clunking comes back. I checked the disc, the pads, the emergency brake, cleaned the clutch on the engine side and now I'm out of idea's. Looking for help!

It sounds like a chain tension issue. The chain is skipping the sprocket under acceleration. Your manual should describe the tightening procedure. Typically it's a bolt with a cotter pin thru it. Don't tighten it to much, just hand tight.

Another thing it could be is track tension. Not sure of clunking could be mistaken for ratcheting? This would more likely be more on the side of accelerating than decelerating. Is it happening at a steady speed/rpm? If its just one clunk when you grab the brake and then another when you go to take off, it most likely it the drive sprockets grabbing the cogs on the track, on mine its normal cause I run the track as loose as possible without ratcheting.
    Once again, just an opinion!

i would have to agree with Budwick. yamaha has a 14 mm locknut on the tensioner then finger tighten the tensioner bolt then snug the lock nut up and your set to go.

possibilitys are : chain loose or sproket broken
    loose track
or da worst case is the bearings are frozen up and well its alotta work to fix it

track clips would be constant and same with the hyfax

Sorry it took so long to re-post. Finally got the 700 fixed, tried adjusting the chain and the noise still didn't go away, turns out that a seal caused all the fluid to leak out and chain was starting to rust and get louder, guess there is a dip stick for checking fluid level? Anyways $250.00 later and it works fine (no noise) . In all my years of owning sleds ( 4 ) I've never had a sled lose chain oil from a bad seal and go bad. Better than losing the side of the motor from the chain going thru it.
