    Toast?

I stopped at one of the local joints yesterday afternoon and before I shut the key off, while at an idle, the motor came to an abrupt stop. I can turn the primary clutch almost a full turn either way before it hits a stop. I don't think that is a good thing.

Anybody care to venture a guess as to what all might be broke?

no good at all... sounds like a teardown is in your immediate future my friend, hopefully the secondary damage will be minimal since it was at idle opposed to higher RPM.

maybe you will get lucky and the recoil fell apart

My first though was a ring but that seems odd if you can move the crank that much.

Is that a possibility? I like your answer best so far!

It turns about 7/8 of a rotation with compression and then it hits a stop and then you can turn it back 7/8 of a rotation and it hits a dead stop again. I sure wish it was a broken recoil!!!

Yuck, start with the easy stuff as mentioned, and work your way down.
