    Hard Starter

I noticed my 96 Vmax XT is taking about 5-6 pulls to start consistintly but will run great and idle fine after it starts, it has went through about 5 gallons of gas and has clean carbs, it did this most of last year as well.

My though is that its the reeds but not sure if there something else, the sled has like 350 miles on the rebuild and as i said runs great once its started. Actually let it idle for 15 minutes without a problem today.

Did you rebuild the fuel pump? Sound like you are having to push gas back to the carbs. Fairly inexpensive insurance if you haven't done it. My $.02

    Good thought
Might look into a new pump or kit if avail, should prob. do the fuel filter as well.

check the fuel lines ! replace replace replace . probally old and hard and suckin air ! i have a 97 vmax xt 500 . even tho its "rebuilt" what is the compression ? was there new jugs installed ? pistons ? or just reringed ? putting new rings on old pistons into old jugs doesnt really help much .

my yammy was doing the same thing and i just gave the idle screw a half turn clockwise and it starts first pull now and didnt notice much of a change in idle

The idle is somewhat low. Both jugs got NEW pistons and rings as well as all new gaskets, plugs from last year but same issue when i had new plugs. There is no air that i can see in the fuel lines or atleast not enough to show bubbles. Do you remeber the stock idle RPM. I think mine is sitting around 1200 right now but not positve (don't really look to be honest)

id check compression just in case . it will effect how it starts .
ive done some reading and got mixed feeling's on honing nikasil jugs . some say yes some say no some say do not use a bead hone some say use a bar hone i dont know whats right or wrong . but i do know nikasil is very hard so i dont know how much it would take to get a "decent" hone to work ?

Could it be as simple as not getting enough fuel to the carbs and beyond? Sounds like air getting in somewhere causing it to lose vac in the fuel lines until it's actually up and running. Carburetion, fuel pump, fuel Lines, choke cable??
