04 indy polaris speedometer

does anyone know how to get the keyway out of the housing (bearing side) for the speedometer?it broke in half and its inside the bearing ,the half that is held on by the three bolts seems to work ok nice and smooth dont know why keyway broke thanks if i need to replace the bearings on the left side are they pressed on or can i change them without pulling the shaft?

Worn bearing is usually the cause of the speedo key snapping off...

The last one I did slid right off. I'm thinkin it will fit through the hole. If all goes well, it should be a quick fix. Good luck

There is a set screw on the collar that holds the bearing in place . Get that lose and it will just slip out through the hole .

I have an 03 xc 700 and just changed the bearing on that side. My bearing was disintegrated and the spedometer key had broken off in the shaft.
The older bearings had a set screw but the newer ones are pressed on. I was able to hit mine off with a hammer easy enough. If you use the old bearing to push on the new one then you wont wreck it. Just make sure you are only hitting the inside ring.
I wouldnt mess around with tryin to get the bearing off without takin everything apart. It will only be more frustrating (speakin from experience). Drop the suspension out first. Then open up the chaincase and take the bottom sprocket off. If you already have the other side open then the shaft should slide right out. Be carefull not to damage the seal on the chaincase side.

ps. For an extra 20 bucks I would change the bearing on the other side too. You are going to have the chaincase apart anyway and the bearing is held in by a snap ring.

I have a 98 RMK and just replaced this bearing and it too was pressed on. Just do exactly what Mooseman said and it shouldn't be that hard. I went one step further and replaced the top bearing in the chaincase also. If one bearing has gone it won't be long before the others go as well. I found that it was easiest to just take the whole chaincase out (only 3 bolts) and change the two bearings on the bench. There is one more bearing located behind the driven clutch which I wanted to change as well but apparently you need some sort of alignment tool for this project so I opted out.

I broke one in my XCR, I used a small drill bit and twisted it with my fingers until it got ahold of the key then pulled it out, mine snapped off after the cable got froze from moisture in the housing. The bearing was fine.
