Some Wisconsin snowmobile fees would nearly double under bill

The Associated Press

MADISON — Out-of-state residents would have to pay nearly double to ride a snowmobile on Wisconsin trails under a bill passed by the state Senate.

The measure passed Thursday would increase the out-of-state trail sticker fee from $18 to $35 starting July 1.

Over the past two years an average of nearly 32,000 such stickers have been sold annually. The increase in cost would generate an extra half million dollars for the state.

The bill must pass the Assembly and be signed by the governor before taking effect.

This is probably fallout from the joke that is the '07-'09 Wisconsin state budget!
Those of us living in WI saw our car license fee go from $48.50 to $75!!

Cigarette tax went up a buck a pack and tax on liquor also took a sizeable jump. It was only a matter of time before the DNR got on the bandwagon.

My own personal solution is to get a new set of politicians in Madison. Maybe ones that can comprehend the word BUDGET!!!

this sounds like the trail sticker.. they way around it is to get a real DNR sticker and dual register, that sticker is good for 2 years I think

Ugh, that price would not be something for the occasional visitor like myself to want to pay. The only time I usually ride in WI is for the Snowtracks get-together, and I can't see paying that much for one weekend's worth or riding. I'd have to have other WI trips planned to make it worth while.

The high price of gas for the truck and 3 sleds.....the new sticker fees for 3 sleds sure makes it hard for a simple family to have fun anymore ...........cant wait till they tax us on the air we breathe ...im sure thats coming soon too .....

might as well, everything else is going up. wouldn't seem right if it didn't - not! hey it's all good to me. and i'll pay the price. cause my seld likes SNOW! lets hope they use it wisely.

my father in law has a house in boulder i geuss time to duel register .
anyone know the cost for wis. ?

revrider - none for sale (yet, lol) see you have a 500 scrambler. me too, mine is a 06' though. son has trailblazer 250.

revrider19, duel registration is the way to go,the only problem is that you have to pay Wis.sales tax at 5.5% and you don't have to have a Wis.adress.i regestered both of my sleds here in Il.Im not sure how much it is(maybe 20 or 25 dollars) and it's only for two years

What is it worth to all of us to continue to have nice trails to ride? This year, funding will be running short, thanks to snow throughout the entire state. The funding we get from this year, keeps us going next year. With short funding, next year will be a struggle. Funding comes from gas tax and registrations. The amount that comes from gas tax is based from registrations sold.

How much gets spent on sleds? How much gets spent on trucks and trailers? How much gets spent on a suit? Most people don't ever think a thing about dropping 30, 40, 50 and more at the bar. NONE of what I have mentioned so far goes towards clubs to pay for trail maintenance. Think about all of that before complaining about $35 for a sticker.

All this being said, we highly recommend dual registering your sled. Right now, that ends up to be $15 per year. On top of that, more of that money ends up in the club's hands than from an out of state sticker. Out of state sticker money gets put into one pile. Then, it is divided among all the counties with funded trails. Then each county's portion gets divided among all the clubs. We figured it out one time. We were getting about 40 cents per sticker. How far do you think we could get with that tea-cup full of fuel?
