Manufactures design the exhausts to give propper performance out of the box. Exhausts are nice, but on todays twin engines, they really don't add too much in horsepower, and are mainly used in the mountains to maintain HP loss from altitude. Spend that money on heads, reeds and a clutch kit, and you'll have much better bang for your buck vs an exhaust kit. Plus, our trails will remain open for use.
Pipes are one of the main reasons our trails are being lost so quickly nowadays.
Ditto I have pipes and i must agree loud abnoxious pipes (thankfully mine are fairly quite) lose a lot of trails and can cause a lot of problems if they are not set up right, and even then esalate problems when they happen trust me.
As far as performance i would look into the clutches usually they are setup fairly mild and can be tweaked for better performance, if your sled has carbs you may want to look at how its jetted for your elevation and temperature as a lot of times they come fairly rich and can leaned out safely (by leaned out i mean to a normal ratio not on the lean side)
Beings you admitted that you are new to this, I will give you my perspective. I learned the hard way about performance. If you are going to be riding your sled, it does not pay to dump money into a motor (or on it). If you want more power, buy a sled with more power. All the factories do their best to squeeze all the power out of their machines without compromising reliability. In my opinion, If you try to improve what you have, you will end up improving everything else down the line to make your first investment work the way it should. For example, if you put a different pipe on, you will most likely have to re-jet and you think you are gaining 5 hp, but, you cant have that extra hp without having your clutch set up correctly. Then you end up putting in a clutch kit, now if your sled ever needs worked on the mechanic really has no idea what he has to work with. I guess I don't know what your intentions are so I may have took this farther than it needed to go. Bottom line is if you want to ride, set it up for how you want to ride (suspension, carbides, picks). If you want to have a money pit and tinker alot, get your wallet out. (sound like a dad don't I?)
keep it queit and keep the trails open!
The two (2) items that the Wisconsin DNR Wardens check for is Registration/Trail pass and modified loud exhaust. Save Your money and save the Trails.
