Located in Sayner Wisconsin, the official birthplace of the snowmobile, the Sayner Barnstormers Snowmobile Club was founded in 1969 on November the 26th. This makes the Barnstormers one of the oldest snowmobile clubs in Wisconsin (oldest?). There were 27 Charter Members. The original officers were President Russell Davis, Vice President Frank Crall, Co-Treasurers Jerry (Paul) Burkhart & Tom Renk, and Secretary Florence Brooker.

When the Barnstormers founded, there were no snowmobile trails in Vilas County. The club fought through strong resistance to build a trail system. A trail system, that thanks to us & our great neighboring clubs, has become one of the best signed and maintained trail systems in the world. Today, we continue to maintain part of the State's oldest snowmobile trail - Trail 51 running through the heart of the Northern Highland / American Legion State Forest. This is along with other trails bordering with and stretching from Arbor Vitae, Boulder Junction, Conover, Eagle River, and Saint Germain.

Today, the Barnstormers have 152 Family Members. We are growing at a steady rate. We have a strong and dedicated group of officers, led by: President Jim Kriek, Vice President & Trail Boss Dennis Horan, Treasurer Tom Reed, and Secretary Sue Keller. Our board of directors include Mike Hoekstra, Stan Kozlowski, and George Schroeder. We have a great group of groomer drivers.

Speaking of groomers, what an evolution has taken place there. We have gone from the days of pulling a bed spring with a snowmobile up to 3 modern grooming rigs. We are constantly striving to improve improve improve! This improvement includes equipment and efficiency. Our fleet of grooming rigs presently consists of: a New Holland tractor with Soucy tracks pulling a 9'6" Sno*Boss Drag, a John Deere tractor pulling a 9'6" Arrowhead drag, and a Tucker Snow Cat pulling a brand new (as of 1/28/08) 8'6" Sno*Boss drag.

This is our New Holland tractor & Sno*Boss drag, added to our fleet this past fall:

The other area we have been working on to steadily make improvements to, are the trails themselves. Trail 51, when built, was never designed for a modern grooming rig with a 9'6" drag. We are currently rehabbing this trail along with others, to widen them and most importantly, make them a safer trail to ride. We also have done many re-routes necessitated by no longer being able to use certain roads as routes along with some areas being very difficult to groom.

The pictures below were taken from Sayner's forth of July parade. This is our tractor/drag lineup for the coming 2009/2010 season. The last New Holland in line is brand new and will be on tracks before the start of the season. The red CaseIH & drag is privately owned by myself and leased to the club for a dollar.
