Craftsman Chain Saw (Poulan)
I have trouble trying to start my chainsaw. It seems that there is such high compression when pulling the rope that it almost pulls your hand apart. Any ideas as to what is happening?

Been there
I have one and it did the same thing. Took it to my small engine mechanic and he tuned the carb. Solved the problem. A good tune up of the saw will most likely solve your problem too.

Sound about right, pull the carb and see how she goes.

I've got a Poulan ( not thru sears, but that probably doesn't matter) that does what sounds like the same thing occasionally. I've always been able to get by it by adjusting the choke when I encounter the hard-pull. If I had full choke, I switch the the next step down. Or the other way around even.
Thing always starts up at least. Runs well, I just wish I had more opportunity to actually use it. Probably should think about cleaning up the carb one of these years though, I do kind of neglect taking care of that saw properly.

FIL's got a few that do that also. Nearly rip you fingers off. After a few pulls it's fine. I have been through the carbs with no fix. I was once told that most lower teir poulans are built for 100hrs of service.

I've got an old one and never had anything like that happen . Blew the drive up once . Never cleaned the carb yet . Then again I run oil higher then what they call for . Had the saw for 15 years now a few chains and a couple of bars . Knock on wood she runs great .

Craftsman Chain Saw
Finally decided to take the carb apart and clean. Did get it started but still gives me fits. I did manage to get the snowmobile trails opened up before I blew my gasket!!! I suppose a new carb kit could be the answer.

I have a Poulan Wild Thing chain saw and a Stihl. I use the Poulan for light jobs like cutting branches off of trees, stumps that have dirt and such on them, schrubs, just crap work and use my Stihl Farm Boss for good things like cutting down trees and cutting logs for firewood. I have beat the snot out of that cheap Poulan. Ran dirt threw it many times. Junked out maybe 25 chains. Its got a ton of hours on it. Never cleaned the carb. Only blow saw off with air form blow gun and check filter. Maybe 2 spark plugs in the 8 years I owned it. Good little cheap saw to have laying around but vibrates a little. Its got over 100 hours on it. I had a Partner brand chop saw at work that we cut concrete, rebar, and other things with. It has a few pulls that about rip off your hand. We took it back a few times and they adjusted the carb and a few other things and got no better. I did notice that all the new ones have a compresion release switch on them for starting. Huh maybe i wasn't the same guy with the problem
