Snowmobile
Capital of the Midwest" continues to be a valid claim of Munising
and Alger County Michigan.
One
reason Alger County is one of the country's premier snowmobiling
areas is the amount of snowfall it receives. A 13-year average shows
the area will receive 232.9 inches of the white stuff each year.
Also,
thanks to Lake Superior, riding-snow generally accumulates earlier
and stays on the ground longer than most other areas.
Another
reason for the area's popularity stems from the coordinated efforts
of federal, state and local entities. These groups, long ago, realized
the importance of snowmobiling and have worked together to combine
the area's enormous natural resources with many miles of groomed
and well-marked trails.
There
are now over 300 miles of marked and groomed trails that allow riders
to travel through some of the most pristine and beautiful areas
nature has to offer anywhere in the world.
There
are 10 trails, which are groomed seven days a week, depending on
the prevailing conditions. On these trails, a rider can travel to
all parts of the county, visiting lakes, streams, falls, forests,
and any number of other scenic sites they choose.
The
trail system reaches from Shingleton to Grand Marais, Seney, Deerton,
Chatham, Manistique and Rapid River. The local trails also connect
with trails from the surrounding counties, which allows riders the
option of choosing trips of various lengths.
In
addition to the best trail systems available anywhere, the area
has over 550 rooms available for tourist and numerous facilities
for their riding and personal convenience. There are numerous restaurants
and motels conveniently located on the trail system.
With
local groups working together upgrading the trail systems and providing
the associated amenities, Munising and Alger County will remain
the Snow Capital of the Midwest.
