Our "Big Dump" of snow is still here from 2 weeks ago, it has stayed cold and flurried us a few times since. We're expected to stay below freezing during the predicted warming trend.
Trails are great with plenty of snow in the woods too. We didn't get a good hard freeze before all our snow fell, so the larger lakes are bumpy from frozen slush (be careful).
Shoreline area consists of Hwy 61 and the downtown Grand Marais area. Ridgeline is just a mile and more inland, and is where the State Trail runs. End of Trail is the 25+ mi inland area from the lake. |

Marais, Cook County, Minnesota - Snowmobiling Information |
|
The
Grand Marais area (including the Gunflint Trail, Lutsen/Tofte/Schroeder)
has well over 200 miles of trails stretching up and down Lake Superior's
shoreline and into the back country along the Gunflint Trail. Connect
with Grand Portage's trails and add more miles to your adventure.
Eye-catching sights can be found liberally scattered throughout
our trail system. The terrain is mountainous and might remind one
of at times of western destinations, because it actually is a very
old mountain range known as the Sawtooth Mountains. Following the
Lake Superior shoreline gives exciting and dramatic changes in scenery
and glimpses of the big lake. Wooded and remote, you'll probably
find yourself slowing down just to get a better look! Maybe at the
moose off in the woods!
We
average 100"+ of snow every winter, and we keep it till April!
During the best snow, our trails are groomed 3-4 times a week to
keep them powder smooth. Riding ranges from straighshot expressways
to rounded twisting trails through thick forests, from hills and
climbs that take plenty of extra throttle to wide open wild lakes
that beg to be played around on.
Accomodations
abound and almost any amenity is available. There are more than
20 different lodging places in the immediate Grand Marais area that
are open year round. From lakeview resorts to a basic bed to housekeeping
cabins and rustic lodges- you can find a place to stay in Grand
Marais. Small town service and hospitality that's just a little
warmer in the winter time.
