Winter
snowmobiling excitement runs rampant throughout northern Wisconsins
Vilas County. Hundreds of lakes and acres of state and national
forest lands provide a winter wonderland for enthusiastic riders.
Land
OLakes, located on the border of Wisconsin and Michigans
Upper Peninsula provides an excellent home base for your winter
excursions. Trails to the north connect with the serene trail network
of the Upper Peninsula. Corridor 6 guides riders across the northern
section of Vilas County from Phelps at the eastern border, through
Land OLakes as it continues on to Presque Isleand Winchester.
The
Presque Isle and Winchester area is graced with an abundant snowfall
thanks to the grand Lake Superior and its welcomed lake effect snows.
This region provides a true wilderness riding experience as trails
meander through vast, peaceful stretches of pine and hardwood forests
and around numerous lakes.
Traveling
south, riders are invited to explore the Manitowish Waters area.
This community provides all the big town amenities in a quaint small
town environment. This peaceful snowmobile hub offers daylong excursions
to St. Germain, Boulder Junction, Mercer and Hurley to name a few.
East
from Manitowish Waters, Trail 2 connects with Trail 8 just west
of Boulder Junction. This area is located in the heart of the Northern
highland State Forest and is surrounded by nearly 500,000 acres
of forestlands with more than 190 lakes within a nine mile radius
of Boulder Junction. Known as a favorite summer fishing hot spot.
Boulder Junction has become an exciting winter playground.
South
of Boulder Junction, centrally located in Vilas County is another
thrilling snowmobile hot spot. St. Germain area offers riders the
opportunity to meander around and across Big and Little St. Germain
Lakes, Pickerel Lake, and the Rainbow Flowage. Trails through the
area provide the option of taking a daylong journey or a half-day
loop tour of the natural beauty of this region.
West
of St. Germain is the delightful vacation area of Woodruff and Arbor
Vitae. Summer resorts become a warm, cozy haven for winter snowmobilers
after a thrilling day on the trails.
Traveling
east from the St. Germain area, riders enter perhaps one of the
most famous snowmobiling areas of all Eagle River. Home to
the World Championship Snowmobile Derby, thousands of fans flock
to this area annually to enjoy the thrill of racing.
For
sno-tourers ready to hit the trails, Eagle River offers numerous
options such as a trek south on Corridor 13 to Three Lakes, east
on Corridor 10 to Michigans Upper Peninsula, north on Trail
17 to Phelps or connect with Corridor 13 north to Conover.
Riders
in Vilas County could ride to a new destination every day of the
week. Fantastic meals ranging from juicy hamburgers to steaks and
