Winchester, Wisconsin - Snowmobiling Information

Winter snowmobiling excitement runs rampant throughout northern Wisconsin’s Vilas County. Hundreds of lakes and acres of state and national forest lands provide a winter wonderland for enthusiastic riders.

Land O’Lakes, located on the border of Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula provides an excellent home base for your winter excursions. Trails to the north connect with the serene trail network of the Upper Peninsula. Corridor 6 guides riders across the northern section of Vilas County from Phelps at the eastern border, through Land O’Lakes as it continues on to Presque Isleand Winchester.

The Presque Isle and Winchester area is graced with an abundant snowfall thanks to the grand Lake Superior and its welcomed lake effect snows. This region provides a true wilderness riding experience as trails meander through vast, peaceful stretches of pine and hardwood forests and around numerous lakes.

Traveling south, riders are invited to explore the Manitowish Waters area. This community provides all the big town amenities in a quaint small town environment. This peaceful snowmobile hub offers daylong excursions to St. Germain, Boulder Junction, Mercer and Hurley to name a few.

East from Manitowish Waters, Trail 2 connects with Trail 8 just west of Boulder Junction. This area is located in the heart of the Northern highland State Forest and is surrounded by nearly 500,000 acres of forestlands with more than 190 lakes within a nine mile radius of Boulder Junction. Known as a favorite summer fishing hot spot. Boulder Junction has become an exciting winter playground.

South of Boulder Junction, centrally located in Vilas County is another thrilling snowmobile hot spot. St. Germain area offers riders the opportunity to meander around and across Big and Little St. Germain Lakes, Pickerel Lake, and the Rainbow Flowage. Trails through the area provide the option of taking a daylong journey or a half-day loop tour of the natural beauty of this region.

West of St. Germain is the delightful vacation area of Woodruff and Arbor Vitae. Summer resorts become a warm, cozy haven for winter snowmobilers after a thrilling day on the trails.

Traveling east from the St. Germain area, riders enter perhaps one of the most famous snowmobiling areas of all – Eagle River. Home to the World Championship Snowmobile Derby, thousands of fans flock to this area annually to enjoy the thrill of racing.

For sno-tourers ready to hit the trails, Eagle River offers numerous options such as a trek south on Corridor 13 to Three Lakes, east on Corridor 10 to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, north on Trail 17 to Phelps or connect with Corridor 13 north to Conover.

Riders in Vilas County could ride to a new destination every day of the week. Fantastic meals ranging from juicy hamburgers to steaks and seafood await hungry riders. Comfortable lodging retreats always extend an open welcome to riders after their day’s adventures.
