The Vilas County trails will officially close at 8:00 am on Friday, March 18, 2022.
Overall, it’s been a great season. Businesses I’ve talked to have indicated higher amounts of traffic this season. Vilas trails were open a total of 81 days this season as compared to only 66 days last year.
A special thank you goes out to all the businesses that have supported our clubs through donations and map ads. Your support is absolutely necessary to continue our trail maintenance.
And, of course, thank you to all the riders who chose to enjoy our trail system. We hope to see you all again next season!!
Enjoy your summer!!

Area Report:
Spring has sprung and our trails are deteriorating quickly. There is still a lot of snow on the ground, especially in the northern part of the county, but with the temperatures in the forecast snow won’t last long. There’s probably time to get in one last ride but temper your expectations.
Some trouble spots to note:
Namakagon Trail Groomers: We are done grooming. There’s still snow on trails but will probably diminish quickly this week. It’s saying 50 for Wed!!
Barnes Barnestormers: Barnes is done as of last Thursday 3/10/22.
Iron River: Trail 1 north is pretty solid yet. But the roads are bad. Jeff groomed on Friday, 3/11/22 for the last time.
Washburn Valhellers: All of the Washburn Valhellers trails were freshly groomed prior to the warm up. They will provide great evening rides for anyone wanting to get a ride or two in before putting their sleds away. But Mother Nature is unpredictable, so who knows! Grooming will be in a holding pattern until further notice. Out of Valhalla we’re pretty much done with the warm temperatures. Possibly Groom on Friday night and Saturday night. But still lots of snow on the trails.
South Shore Trail Club: Went grooming Monday and Tuesday, most trails are still great however access into all 3 South Shores towns is not very good. Port Wing is ok from the south. Herbster is all pavement or gravel and Corny has logging on both sides of town, I had to turn around yesterday due to mud.

Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club Trail Report – Wednesday, 3/16/22:
It’s 37 degrees out with a high of 52 degrees for today. We officially have suspended grooming this past Sunday. The Vilas County Alliance is meeting tonight to vote on a closing date. There were sleds out yesterday, but with the warm temps today, this will probably will be our last day to get a ride in.
Stayed tuned in for a final report after the closing date is announced.

Area Report:
As of this AM, trails are still listed as open. Vilas county meeting is tonight where I suspect the vote will be to close the trails. Next 7 days have temperatures above freezing and that March sun has done its damage. Maybe some trails in the wooded areas are still holding, but anything in the sun is down to nothing.
This has been a great year with the minimal amount of snow we received. The groomers made the best out of what they had to work with.

Grooming the trails this year cost $300 per night per groomer. We do receive money from the county, but once we exceed that amount, the cost of grooming comes from the club.
