Trail Report – : Phelps, Wisconsin – December 1, 2021

Reporter:Phelps Snowmobile Club

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 8″-10″

Date of Report: December 1, 2021

Area Report:

Welcome to December.  Snowmobile season is almost here.  Between snowfalls over the weekend and another blast on Monday, we have a good 8″-10″ on the ground.  Grant it that it was pretty fluffy and will settle down quite a bit.  North Twin is about half frozen and more colder weather is needed to freeze the lakes solid and to firm up the swamps.  Our club has been busy brushing and signing this fall and trails will be ready for when they open.  Panning will begin shortly to help freeze down a solid base for the trails.  Hope all of you have your sleds ready to go.  Please, if you not already a member of a club, join now to help support the trails throughout the state of Wisconsin.  Plus club members receive discount on trail pass purchases.  Remember that when it is time, stay on the marked trail and ride safe.

First Report of the 2021-2022 Season!
2 days of SNOW in Vilas County! Total over the 2 days for Eagle River is 6-8 inches with a bit more east of Eagle River. Looks like the temp will be jumping up Wednesday & Thursday. So what’s needed is a strong THINK COLD!!

In the meantime, Sno-Eagles is busy finishing up securing easements, brushing & signing snowmobile trails. Prepping grooming equipment. The Trail Boss & groomer drivers met last night for an organizational meeting at Erin’s Pub & Grub. A big supporter of the Sno-Eagles trails.

Trails will not open until after the 9 days deer gun hunt, 10 day muzzle loader season & 4 day Youth Hunt are complete. This with snow conditions permitting.

So as I said……THINK COLD! Then we can do THE SNOW DANCE!

Area Report:

Well tomorrow is December 1st and our trails are supposed to open. However after getting around 4″-5″ inches of this past weekend it hit a warm 36° today. Along with some very gusty wind we lost a lot of our snow. So until we get some significant snow there will be no groomer yet.

Remember trail from Dollar Bay to Lake Linden and the Frieda trail are both closed all season. Also trail 109 out of Twin Lakes to Alston will be closed permanently. We did get trail 133 back this year but we are still working on getting it open as soon as possible.

Area Report:

Well, things are very white around here.   We received 5-6” of fresh snow over the past few days.  Unfortunately trails will not open for a couple weeks.   Ice is forming on most lakes.   We need some colder weather before things really freeze up in the swamps and the lakes.

Please, please keep off the trails till they open.

The Phelps trail system is being brushed and signs checked for safety and proper placement.  We have had a couple snowfalls of 4″ but they only last a few days.  Some of the smaller lakes hve seen some early ice forming.  We will be out after the gun deer season to check the trails and and get them ready for trail opening.  Everyone start thinking snow, at least for Vilas County.

Trail Conditions: Not Ridable

Snow Cover: Zero snow cover

Date of Report: October 31, 2021

Area Report:

I know it’s a month before the trails officially opening but I thought I’d give everyone a reminder of what’s happening in the U.P. First off unlike last year we had close to 10″ on the ground. This year it’s 44° and rain. Hopefully things will change soon.

Keep in mind trail 3 from Dollar Bay to Lake Linden and the Frieda Loop are still closed from the foods of 2018. However funding has finally been approved for trail 3 to be repaired. Also trail 109 south from Twin Lakes to Alston is permanently closed due to trespassers on private land. We will be getting trail 133 back this year after a couple years of closure due to logging.
