*Please note – The Saunders Grade Traill will be closed for the entire 2018/2019 winter season due to significant damage caused by June 2018 flooding.*
The Douglas County region experienced a significant winter storm over December 26-27th. Due to the widespread nature of the storm, depending on location the county experienced rain (over 1 inch in some areas), snow (up to 12 inches), and/or sleet. The combination of wet heavy snow and high winds has resulted in a large number of saplings and downed trees blocking trails. Club members are actively working on clearing these trees but it will likely take several days due to the large quantities of downed trees on the trails.
Where possible, clubs are packing trails with grooming equipment. However, the trail base is very soft at this time. Trail use is not recommended until the area has experienced a cold spell in order for the trail’s bases to freeze flat for the rest of the season.
Please see the map for which trails are currently open.
We will provide updates as more trails are opened or as conditions change.

Area Report:
Trails in Bayfield County are still currently closed. The much anticipated snowstorm did bring snow to most of the county, but the snow was very wet and there was also a lot of rain mixed in. The ground was wet before the snow fell so we need to be sure the swamps are frozen and safe for travel. Safety of riders is our number one priority. We are gathering information from our local clubs and will open the trails when we know they are safe. There is more snow and cold in the forecast so hopefully we will be able to open the trails soon!

For now, the snowmobile trails throughout Washburn County remain closed as we will need more snow to maintain a good trail for the rest of the season. Keep thinking snow!

THE VILAS COUNTY SNOWMOBILE TRAIL SYSTEM WILL OFFICIALLY OPEN AT 9:00 A.M. ON SATURDAY 12/29/2018:
All trails in the Boulder Junction Trail System will have been panned and just starting to create a base. I would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work in making possible for the trail system to be opening. Please use extreme CAUTION! This is early season riding. All areas have very little snow. Some areas have ruts and there can be many hazards on the trail. The swamps and boggy areas in trail system are still freezing up. Please stay on the marked trails. Be careful! Pray for more snow and cold to improve our conditions. Remember be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride. ~ Jim (Hammy) Hamilton, Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club President

Area Report:
We’ve received several inches of very welcomed snow last night. Not as much as we expected – but certainly enough to get the groomers rolling again. Yesterday riders reported that Lake Gogebic Area trails 102 and 1N were in good/fair condition even with the traffic and rain. There are spots to look out for and some watery crossings, but you just have to use some extra caution. That nonsense sleet/rain that we received yesterday combined with single digit overnight temperatures has actually been of benefit to the base.
Snow is in the forecast today and every day for the next week with the exception of 2 days. Winds look to shift to the North and we should get pounded with snow. John Dee indicates that should be happening Tuesday. Temps have dropped to single digits at night which helped turn that nonsense snow/sleet/rain we received into some useful to help our base.
We’ll give you an update once the Groomers have a chance to get out on the trails. That’s what we got for now. Please be safe out there – repeat business is the secret to our success and we want you to be a part of it! This is Mary Beth from AJ’s Walleye Lodge wishing everyone a very Happy New Year! May 2019 bring good health and good times to all!
