VILAS COUNTY TRAILS
TO REMAIN OPEN THROUGH THE WEEKEND

Well, if you want to take one more ride in Vilas County it will have to be this weekend.  The Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance President has contacted all 11 Clubs.  The recommendation from these 11 Clubs to the Vilas County Park & Recreation Administrator is to have the trails remain open this weekend with a closing either Monday or Tuesday of next week.

11 degrees at 7:10am with temps moving up to a high of 44 degrees today.  The evil sun will be out.

As for the trails in Eagle River, Sno-Eagles Trails are POOR to FAIR.  In town trails have very little snow & are snirty.   Many of the road trails for the most part have little or snow.  The base is hard on some of the “grade” but there is also crusty base & frozen dirt in the AM & mushy conditions in the afternoon.  At road crossings little or no snow on them.

In woods trails particularly way out east & north are FAIR.   That would be 6 to 10 miles or more out of town & under the cover of trees. Getting to them would mean a lot of adventure sledding to get there however.  Trailering & dropping off to ride is a good bet.

Here are some continuing areas to be aware of:

Trail 1N logging operation continues in the section between the Town Hall road & Eagle Lake. There are log piles along side of the trails with icy grainy & burn out section conditions. It would be good to slow down.

The Northland Pines School Forest logging project has expanded to Trail 17N.  It begins on the east side of Hwy 45N.  From town that would be heading north and when you reach the 17N/3N intersection on the west side of the highway & cross Hwy 45N it begins just as you get across the road onto the trail.  There are logs & equipment in that area.  Much of the remaining snow was plowed.  Would recommend not riding this section.

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trails are marked with orange easy to see reflective barrels.  Please stay by the barrels to be safe.  At the entrance to Eagle Lake on the south side off of Dollar Lake Rd there are some soft spots.  Trail Boss is keeping an eye on it.  Reminder that the Catfish Lake Trail that ran from Braywood to Lumpy’s is not open.  Please do not trespass on private land.

If you are coming into the area the best riding will be along the far north edge of the County heading east & west.  Recommend calling contacts up there or checking trails reports for those areas.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Trail Report – : Price County – Park Falls, Phillips & Prentice, Wisconsin – March 16, 2018

Reporter:Price County Tourism Department

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 0 – 12 inch trail base

Date of Report: March 16, 2018

Area Report:

Price County snowmobile trails are in poor to good condition. Some areas still have a good base but the conditions are spotty. There are many bare spots and sections where the trail is bare in logging areas, and road routes are bare. Trails in wooded areas are best, so trailering to a parking area along the trail away from town is recommended if you plan to ride. The trails are icy in many areas and especially on corners, and approaches to road crossings are thin or bare in many areas. With temps in the 40s predicted for the next few days, expect to encounter muddy and wet areas and deteriorating conditions. Tuesday was the last day of trail grooming. During March, conditions can improve with snow or deteriorate quickly with sun and warm temps. The trails remain open through March 31, 2018.

Several miles of trail are open for winter ATV and UTV riding. The Price County portion of the Pine Line Rail Trail (Prentice to Ogema), Snowmobile Trail 189 (Ogema to Timm’s Hill), and Snowmobile Trails 116, 181 and 118 (Prentice area loop) are open to winter ATV and UTV riding when the trail is officially open to snowmobile use and the temperature is  28 degrees or colder.

Some Price County trails are on private land. The use of the private land is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. Please stay on marked trails, especially across fields. There have been many complaints from landowners due to snowmobilers not staying on the trail and riding all over their fields. To avoid having these TRAILS CLOSED, PLEASE respect the private land that is open to snowmobiling and stay on marked trails.

Trail report for March 16, 2018 Poor to Fair Condition. With no snow in the forecast the trails have remained very much the same. The trails are down to the base and bare in spots but out away from town are much better. With the temps in the 30’s to 40’s for the next couple of days they will degrade very quickly. This may be the last time to take that sled for a ride before putting it away for the season.   Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Area Report:

The City Trail and Trail #8 going west are the only trails left that are being groomed and rideable; they may make it to the weekend at least west of Brimley.

Follow us on Facebook, too.

We have a newly-plowed parking area at the beginning of Trail #8 under the International Bridge, which now has an all-season porta-john.  Make sure you lock your vehicles and trailers.

If you are staying in the Sault, please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business.  Please do that in all towns you visit.  The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!

Remember, trail base is the amount of snow between your track and the ground below, not the amount of fluff piled up in the woods.  10 inches of snow compresses to less than an inch on the trail.

Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 3 inches -Trail is in fair condition.

Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 4 inches -Trail is in fair to good condition.

When going across the bridge in Brimley, make sure you go with the flow of traffic!  Blowing and drifting occurs when you first leave Brimley.

Raco to Naomikong Trail #8 [where Paradise meets us], Trail #8 –

Base 2 – 5 inches – Trail is in fair to good condition.

Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49 –

Base 1 – 4 inches – Trail is in poor to fair condition. Trail is groomed past the Casino down to the Antlers. We now have a marked trail going to Chippewa Motors.  It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449.  It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.

City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember, most City streets are open to traffic 20 mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right-hand side of street not on sidewalks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.

Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –

Base 0 – 3 inches – Trail is in poor to fair condition.

Make sure you follow the reroute once you cross the bridge going south at 7 Mile Road.

When the trail is running along roads make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.

Kinross loop & south to Pickford, Parts of Trail #49, #472, and #494 –

Base 0 – 2 inches – Trail is in poor condition.  Watch for trucks on the trail.

Kinross to Raco & Rudyard, Parts of trail #472 & #480 –

Base 1 – 3 inches – Trail is in poor to fair condition. Watch for reroute signs just west of Kinross.  Trail to Rudyard has been groomed, but logging is going on, too.

The Downtown Trail is signed but the snow and barrels on the Portage Ave. Bridge have been removed.
