Trail Report – : Rhinelander, Wisconsin – February 28, 2018

Reporter:Hodag SnoTrails

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: diminishing quickly

Date of Report: February 28, 2018

Area Report:

The sun and warm temperatures are taking a heavy hit to the trails.  The trails are in fair condition with spots that are poor.  The trail base is soft and mushy at this point.

The trails that are exposed to the sun have bare spots and snirt.  The forest roads are fair, but to have a full day ride, you will most likely encounter areas that are poor.  The trail into town has bare spots.  The further you can go out of town the better off they are.

Grooming activity has been halted until cooler weather returns – hopefully.

When riding these conditions, please stay on the marked trails at all time.  It can be enticing to go off the trails to hit some plentiful snow, but the ramifications with an upset landowner can be devastating to the trail system.

Could be the last runs of the year in the next few days.

We received a total of 14-18″ of snow over the last week and all trails have been groomed since Monday. This is the weekend to be in the Cable Area! We have a solid base, fresh snow, and groomers are working hard! This is the best riding we’ve seen all season. And, we have two awesome events this weekend!

It’s Weenie Roast Weekend!

Known throughout the region as the most fun on ice, thousands of weenie enthusiasts come to Lake Namakagon for this fantastic event. Held to raise funds for the Great Divide Ambulance Service, the Namakagon Volunteer Fire Department and other area charities and not-for-profits, this event holds the record for the longest line of hot dog cookers over one fire in the world. With events like snowmobile speed runs, ice bowling, outlaw drags and the frozen weenie polar bear plunge into Lake Namakagon, there is more than enough fun for everyone.

Areas of concern are trail 90 east between Old Grade and Federal Rd. The reroute has been removed and trail 90 is open! Watch for logging trucks as they are still removing some loads and running on Federal Road. Another area is Trail 15 between Club Lake Rd and Camp Eight Rd at the Great Divide. Heavy ice over the trail due to a spring that continues to spread water across the trail.

Trail Report – : Price County – Park Falls, Phillips & Prentice, Wisconsin – February 28, 2018

Reporter:Price County Tourism Department

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 1 – 15 inch trail base

Date of Report: February 28, 2018

Area Report:

Price County snowmobile trails are in good condition. Trails that were groomed this week are reported to be in very good to excellent condition. The trails have a good base in most areas, however, some corners may be icy, bare spots are starting in some open areas, approaches at road crossing are starting to become bare in some areas, and road routes are bare. Forecasters are predicting overnight lows below freezing with a chance for light snow on Thursday so we are hopeful the trails will hold up through this warm spell, but conditions can deteriorate quickly. Detailed trail condition reports can be view on our website at pricecountywi.net.

Some Price County trails are on private land. The use of the private land is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. Please stay on marked trails, especially across fields. There have been many complaints from landowners due to snowmobilers not staying on the trail and riding all over their fields. To avoid having these TRAILS CLOSED, PLEASE respect the private land that is open to snowmobiling.

Several miles of trail are open for winter ATV and UTV riding including the Flambeau Trail System, Solberg Trail, and Georgetown Trail. The Price County portion of the Pine Line Rail Trail (Prentice to Ogema), Snowmobile Trail 189 (Ogema to Timm’s Hill), and Snowmobile Trails 116, 181 and 118 (Prentice area loop) are also open to winter ATV and UTV riding when the trail is officially open to snowmobile use and the temperature is 28 degrees or colder.

You can order visitor information or maps from the Price County Tourism Department website, www.pricecountywi.net, or call 715-339-4505, plus you can listen to recorded trail reports or talk to the friendly Tourism Department staff.

Trail Report 2/28/2018

NE Quadrant

Good news, more snow!  Significant amounts of new snow fell Sunday/Monday, Thursday, and again on Saturday of last week.  We have gone from ice trails to the other extreme of having difficulties grooming due to too much snow!  Trails did take a major beating over the weekend.  Sunday and Monday there were a few icy spots in the tightest corners before grooming and some will probably reappear as the week continues with warmer temps during the day. Trails are excepted to hold up very well with the new snow and warm weather for the time being.

All trails were groomed Sunday evening and Monday morning except the upper end of Trail 35 (Wild Rivers Trail) and the west end of Trail 2 (Tri-County Corridor).

We hope to get the last sections done by end of day 2/28.

The Trail 4 Detour between Bennett Junction and the Bennett Road has been reopened.  We have a new culvert in place of the old bridge.  Trails are all flat underneath but they aren’t expected to hold up very well with all the new snow and warm weather.

Logging in progress: Trail 4 East of Bellwood Pit Road (shot haul route).  East of Hawthorne the logging job T’s off and crosses our trail several times and signage has been upgraded in that area.

NW Quadrant

All trails in this area are in excellent condition with the exception of the Logging operation areas. All trails have been groomed and are ready for the weekend.  Watch for drainage ways as they start to open creating dips and/or refreezing creating icy spots.  Gravel Road connectors are starting to fade quickly with the warmer temps but many of the grader operators have been kind in leaving snow on the edge or even shoveling the snow banks.  Get out and ride before the end of the season! The time is now!

Please note that some of the trails in the Municipal Forest will be temporarily closed (6am – 2pm) for an event on SUNDAY MARCH 4.

Logging operations continue on Trail 4 and Trail 41 between Bear Creek Bridge and Wanek Road.  On Trail 4 between Brietzman Lake Road and Big Balsam Road are also experiencing logging activity.  Brushing is ongoing in these areas that are not accessible until this time of year.  Please use caution and watch for equipment on these grails.

Please note – the parking lot located off Tuff Road is closed for the season and there is no trail access from the lot.

SW Quadrant

We have received plenty of new snow this week.  Groomers have been out, trails in the SW Quadrant are in excellent condition! Please watch out for logging operations on the trails.

Conditions across all 98.6 miles of the Jackpine Riders Trail System are excellent. All trails have been groomed or will be groomed before the end of the week.

Wascott Trail 3 was groomed and is in very good to excellent condition.

Trails 217 and Trail 17
Trail 217 and Trail 17 from Cabin Lane to Trail 8 are in good condition and have been groomed.

Douglas County Ski Trails
The Douglas County Cross Country Ski Trails have been groomed and packed.  Conditions are expected to be good after the grooming.

The Superior Municipal Forest Cross Country Ski Trails have been groomed. The track has been reset on all of the Red and Green loops.  The groomers hope to have fresh track set on the Blue, Purple and Yellow trails by 2/28. This Sunday, March 4, a winter triathlon is being held on the SMF trails, which means the yellow and part of the purple trails will be closed from approximately 6 am – 1:30 pm.

Pattison State Park has been groomed and tracked and is in excellent condition.

Brule River After Hours Ski Trail has well over a foot of snow on the ground, however the daytime high temperatures reaching 40’s+ this week are making the trails soft.  Trails were rolled today; track is set only at the entry and exit.  Conditions are good.
