Trail Report – : Price County – Park Falls, Phillips & Prentice, Wisconsin – February 23, 2018

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Area Report:

Price County trails received 5-7 inches of fresh heavy, wet snow Thursday night. After the trails are groomed, the condition should be excellent. The volunteer groomer drivers are out working on getting our 500 miles of trail shaped up as quickly as possible which can take up to three full days. Some Price County trails are on private land. The use of the private land is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. Please stay on marked trails, especially across fields. There have been many complaints from landowners due to snowmobilers not staying on the trail and riding all over their fields. To avoid having these TRAILS CLOSED, PLEASE respect the private land that is open to snowmobiling.

Several miles of trail are open for winter ATV and UTV riding including the Flambeau Trail System, Solberg Trail, and Georgetown Trail. The Price County portion of the Pine Line Rail Trail (Prentice to Ogema), Snowmobile Trail 189 (Ogema to Timm’s Hill), and Snowmobile Trails 116, 181 and 118 (Prentice area loop) are also open to winter ATV and UTV riding when the trail is officially open to snowmobile use and the temperature is 28 degrees or colder.

Area Report:

We received 4-6″ of fresh snow last night. This will do a good job of covering the snirt on the exposed trails. They are forecasting more snow for Saturday (we will see….). The trails will be in good shape for the weekend.

There will still be icy corners, due to the thin overall base. Be careful out there and be watchful for fellow sledders. This should be a good weekend to get out and ride.

We received freezing rain two days this week but we sure wish it would have been all snow. With the warm weather, trails are mushy.

When the weather is warmer then 32 degrees please stay off the trails with ATVs & UTVs.

We all need to do the snow dance!

Smooth and flat base with 6-8 inches of fresh powder on top makes for a perfect weekend of riding in Land O Lakes. Groomers are out. Temps are near 30 and more snow in the forecast. Life is good if you are a snowmobiler in Land O Lakes.

It is critical that we respect the landowners who allow us to use their property. Please review the information below carefully before riding to confirm that you are using open trails.

Trail Report 2/23/2018

NE Quadrant

Good news, more new snow! The 3-4” of snow in addition to the 8-10” of snow that has fallen since Sunday/Monday has added significant amounts of snow on top of icy trails. Since the Sunday-Monday snow all of the Brule River Rider Trails have been groomed, with most of them having been groomed twice. With the new four inches of snow most trails will not get groomed again before the weekend. Please keep in mind the worst corners with heavy traffic may burn down through the snow cover to the icy base.

The Trail 4 Detour between Bennett Junction and the Bennett Road has been reopened. We have a new culvert in place of the old bridge. Trails are all flat underneath but they aren’t expected to hold up very well with all the new snow and warm weather.

Logging in progress: Trail 4 East of Bellwood Pit Road (shot haul route). East of Hawthorne the logging job T’s off and crosses our trail several times and signage has been upgraded in that area.

NW Quadrant

All trails in this area are in good conditions with the exception of the Logging operation areas. All trails have been groomed and are ready for the weekend.

Logging operations continue on Trail 4 and Trail 41 between Bear Creek Bridge and Wanek Road. On Trail 4 between Brietzman Lake Road and Big Balsam Road are also experiencing logging activity. Brushing is ongoing in these areas that are not accessible until this time of year. Please use caution and watch for equipment on these grails.

Please note – the parking lot located off Tuff Road is closed for the season and there is no trail access from the lot.

SW Quadrant

We have received plenty of new snow this week. Groomers have been out, trails in the SW Quadrant are in excellent condition! SE Quadrant
Thank you to everyone who did the snow dance! After receiving 10” of snow Sunday & Monday, we received an additional 6” Thursday night. Conditions across all 98.6 miles of the Jackpine Riders Trail System are excellent. All trails have been groomed at least once this week and our neighbors to the East in Barnes and northeast in Brule are reporting excellent conditions also. This is the weekend to ride!

Wascott Trail 3 received 6 inches of new snow and was groomed on Tuesday and is in very good to excellent condition.

Trails 217 and Trail 17
Trail 217 and Trail 17 from Cabin Lane to Trail 8 are in excellent condition and will be groomed by the end of Saturday.

Douglas County Ski Trails
The Douglas County Cross Country Ski Trails have been groomed and packed. Additional snowfall occurred after grooming. Crews will not be out again until after the weekend.

The Superior Municipal Forest Cross Country Ski Trails have been groomed, but the groomers were not able to set tracks for the yellow trail as of Feb 22. This will be completed by the weekend. Trails were in excellent condition.

Pattison State Park has been groomed and tracked and is in excellent condition.

Brule River After Hours Ski Trail has had nearly a foot of snow over the last few days. Trails are being groomed and tracked Tuesday. Trails are in excellent condition. There is about 20 inches of snow on the ground with 6 inches for the base.

I would call our trails good to very good! With 6 inches of fresh snow that fell last night (February 22nd) our trails are looking good! Be safe out there and remember your signals to oncoming riders as well as those behind you! RIDE SAFE.

A huge thank you to all who attended the Winterfest Rendezvous and those who purchased tickets on our Arctic Cat Raffle. Congratulations to winner Dave Mueller! Dave is a club member and helps out at Our Duck Race!

Thank you to all of our volunteers that made our event a huge success! Some of these guys took 2 days off of work to help set the tent and organize everything. This is a lot of work, but so rewarding to know that it went so well! Proceeds from the Winterfest and raffles go towards trail maintenance!

I am proud of how everyone pitched in to make this such a great event: from the people and businesses who donated raffle items, to those who attended and purchased raffle tickets and especially the volunteers! We look forward to next years events!

The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters snowmobile club was founded in 1968 and is one of the oldest snowmobile clubs in existence today in Wisconsin. Trail Report – : Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan – February 23, 2018

Area Report:

Warm during the day and cold at night, though trails are still in good shape. Groomers going out late at night and early morning. Supposed to get some snow Thursday night late and Saturday night, too.

We have a newly-plowed parking area at the beginning of Trail #8 under the International Bridge, which now has an all-season porta-john.

If you are staying in the Sault, please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business. Please do that in all towns you visit. The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!

Remember, trail base is the amount of snow between your track and the ground below, not the amount of fluff piled up in the woods. 10 inches of snow compresses to less than an inch on the trail.

Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –

Base 2 – 4 inches – Trail is in good condition.

Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 –

Base 3 – 5 inches – Trail is in good to excellent condition.

When going across the bridge in Brimley, make sure you go with the flow of traffic! Blowing and drifting occurs when you first leave Brimley.

Raco to Naomikong Trail #8 [where Paradise meets us], Trail #8 –

Base 4 – 7 inches – Trail is in good to excellent condition.

Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49 –

Base 2 – 5 inches – Trail is in good condition. Trail is now groomed past Casino down to the Antlers.

We now have a marked trail going to Chippewa Motors. It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449. It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.

City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember, most City streets are open to traffic 20 mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right-hand side of street, not on sidewalks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.

Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –

Base 2 – 5 inches – Trail is in good condition.

Make sure you follow the reroute once you cross bridge going south at 7 Mile Road.

When the trail is running along roads, make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.

Kinross loop & south to Pickford, Parts of Trail #49, #472, and #494 –

Base 3- 5 inches – Trail is in good Condition. Watch for trucks on trail.

Kinross to Raco & Rudyard, Parts of Trail #472 & #480 –

Base 2 – 6 inches – Trail is in good to excellent condition. Watch for reroute signs just west of Kinross. Trail to Rudyard has been groomed, but logging going on, too.

The Downtown Trail is signed and snow and barrels are on Portage Ave. Bridge.
