Trail Report – : Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin – March 15, 2018

Reporter:Manitowish Waters Chamber

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 10-15 inches

Date of Report: March 15, 2018

Area Report:

Date March 15th, 2018
Trail Conditions: Poor
Posted by: Barry Hopkins – Snowmobile Club President
Vilas County trails will be open through the weekend.  Please understand that trails are overall in poor condition.  You will find decent riding in the woods, however it is getting harder to connect the good sections.  Road crossings, sections that share roads and exposed areas will be thin to bare.  Please respect landowners who graciously allow us to cross their property and stay on the trails.  Clubs lose trails when riders run off of the trails, so if you love our sport as much as I do, respect the property owners,  or stay home.   With that being said, please be safe and have fun out there!

News and Reports:

A big thank you to the Manitowish Waters Chamber for mailing maps out for us and their help in reporting trail conditions.  Also a  huge thank you to the groomer operators who volunteer their time to make our trails the best they can be!

Snowmobile Information:

The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters snowmobile club was founded in 1968 and is one of the oldest snowmobile clubs in existence today in Wisconsin. Located in the very northwest corner of Vilas county, Manitowish Waters borders the Lake Superior snow-belt country. With average snowfalls of 150 inches and over 25 miles of professionally groomed trails, the area is one of Vilas County’s top winter vacation areas.Manitowish Waters , Wisconsin - Snowmobiling Conditions & News

The Manitowish Waters trail system is a unique hub network directly linking into 5 other trail systems. With Minocqua/Woodruff to our south, St. Germain/Eagle River to our southeast, Lake Gogebic to our north, Presque Isle/Winchester to our northeast, Mercer and Hurley to our northwest and Lac du Flambeau/Price County to our west, our area residents and guests can choose from a variety of daily or overnight destinations for scenic riding with excellent pit stops along the way.

The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters maintain an active grooming schedule for the area’s trail system. Coordinated efforts with the surrounding communities provide continuous smoothly-groomed trails in this northwest sector. The Sno-Skeeters own and operate some of the newest grooming equipment on the market today. Support the club by attending their special events or contributing to the “trail pigs” at local establishments along the trails. Or show your support by becoming a member!

Enjoy, and please ride responsibly and safely!

Trail Report 3/12/2018

NE Quadrant

As of March 12, 2018, Trail 235 is closed from Trail 2 (Tri County Corridor) to Highway E.

There are areas of great riding but the warm days are taking their toll. With the expected warm temperatures, we will probably close trials before the weekend. A limited amount of grooming took place Monday.

Trail 4 east of Hawthorne is said to be pretty ugly in the logging area.

Trail 2 in Superior is pretty bare in the east end of Superior.  Trail 2 west of the Brule River is pretty pare for a block or so.

Trail 27A is icy, Trail 27 north of Trail 27A is still quite rideable.

NW Quadrant

Trails in the Drift Dodgers Club area are still being groomed as we still have sufficient snow pack and are in pretty good shape overall.  The warmer temperatures are starting to take their toll and trails are beginning to melt.  Please watch for accumulating water in lower areas and swamps.  Gravel road connectors are bare.  We anticipate there is a very good likelihood that the trails will close soon.

The Crosstown trail in Superior has been closed.

Please note the parking lot located off Tuff Road has been closed for the season and there is no trail access from that lot.

SW Quadrant

At this time our trials continue to be at a solid good rating.  Where the trails are on or along roads or logging, we would rate them as poor.  Please use the trails appropriately and respect our landowners.

SE Quadrant
All JPR trails remain open at this time.

Trails 27B, 41N, 541, 41S, and 41B are groomed and are in fair shape.

Trails 217 and Trail 17
Trail 217 and Trail 17 are in mainly fair condition, but poor where trails are near or along roads.

Douglas County Ski Trails
The Douglas County Cross Country Ski Trails have been groomed late last week and are in good condition.

The Superior Municipal Forest Cross Country Ski Trails as of March 13 have been recently groomed, and there is still snow on most of the trail, however bare patches are beginning to show up and grow with warmer temperatures.

Pattison State Park has been groomed, but please watch for bare spots as the weather continues to warm-up.

Brule River After Hours Ski Trail as of March 12 were groomed and in fair condition.  Bare spots are beginning to pop up, so please watch out for them as they grow.

VILAS COUNTY TRAILS
TO REMAIN OPEN THROUGH THE WEEKEND

Well, if you want to take one more ride in Vilas County it will have to be this weekend.  The Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance President has contacted all 11 Clubs.  The recommendation from these 11 Clubs to the Vilas County Park & Recreation Administrator is to have the trails remain open this weekend with a closing either Monday or Tuesday of next week.

As for right here in Eagle River, Sno-Eagles Trails are POOR to FAIR. Actually very little change over the last few days.  In town trails are POOR. The base is hard on some of the “grade” but there is also crusty base.  At crossings very little snow & snirty.   Many of the road trails for the most part have little or no snow on them.

In woods trails particularly way out east, north & southwest are FAIR with even some areas of GOOD but this is getting far & few between. That would be 6 miles or more out of town.  A lot of adventure sledding to get there however.  Trailering & dropping off to ride is a good bet.  There will be sun most of the rest of the week. Temps on average in the mid-30’s to the low 40’s.

Here are some continuing areas to be aware of:

Trail 1N logging operation continues in the section between the Town of Washington Town Hall & Eagle Lake. With the log piles and icy grainy conditions in that section it would be good to slow down. Minimal grooming due to the logging operation.

The Northland Pines School Forest logging project has expanded to Trail 17N.  It begins on the east side of Hwy 45N.  From town that would be heading north and when you reach the 17N/3N intersection on the west side of the highway & cross Hwy 45N it begins just as you get across the road onto the trail.  There are logs & equipment in that area.  Much of the remaining snow was plowed.  Would recommend not riding this section.

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trails are marked with orange easy to see reflective barrels.  Please stay by the barrels to be safe.  At the entrance to Eagle Lake on the south side off of Dollar Lake Rd there are some soft spots.  Trail Boss is keeping an eye on it.  Reminder that the Catfish Lake Trail that ran from Braywood to Lumpy’s is not open.  Please do not trespass on private land.

If you are coming into the area the best riding will be along the far north edge of the County heading east & west.  Recommend calling contacts up there or checking trails reports for those areas.

Think I hear the Fat Lady Singing.

Trail Report – : Price County – Park Falls, Phillips & Prentice, Wisconsin – March 14, 2018

Reporter:Price County Tourism Department

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 0 – 12 inch trail base

Date of Report: March 14, 2018

Area Report:

Price County snowmobile trails still have a good base in many areas; however, there are sections of bare trail and bare road routes throughout the county. You can view detailed trail condition reports on our website at pricecountywi.net. Trails in wooded areas are in good condition, so trailering to a parking area along the trail away from town is the best option. The trails are icy in some areas and especially on corners, approaches to road crossings are becoming thin or bare in most areas, and road routes are bare. Tuesday will be the last day of trail grooming as temps are predicted to warm and there is no significant snow in the forecast. During March, conditions can improve with snow or deteriorate quickly with sun and warm temps. The trails will remain open through March 31, 2018.

Several miles of trail are open for winter ATV and UTV riding including the Flambeau Trail System, Solberg Trail, and Georgetown Trail. The Price County portion of the Pine Line Rail Trail (Prentice to Ogema), Snowmobile Trail 189 (Ogema to Timm’s Hill), and Snowmobile Trails 116, 181 and 118 (Prentice area loop) are also open to winter ATV and UTV riding when the trail is officially open to snowmobile use and the temperature is  28 degrees or colder.

Some Price County trails are on private land. The use of the private land is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. Please stay on marked trails, especially across fields. There have been many complaints from landowners due to snowmobilers not staying on the trail and riding all over their fields. To avoid having these TRAILS CLOSED, PLEASE respect the private land that is open to snowmobiling and stay on marked trails.

Trail Report – : Rhinelander, Wisconsin – March 14, 2018

Reporter:Hodag SnoTrails

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: hard base

Date of Report: March 14, 2018

Area Report:

This is getting to be the last run of the year.  Warm weather in the forecast and no new snow over the next few days.

Trails are down to the hard base at this point. There are numerous bare spots where the trails are in the open.  If you are willing to cross some of these areas to get “into” the woods there is some riding out there.  It will not be good riding, but they are travelable with some bad spots.

Unless there is a drastic change next week, this could be the last weekend to be open.
