Trail Report – : Sayner, Wisconsin – January 22, 2018

Reporter:SaynerStar Lake Barnstormers

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 8 to 12 inches In The Woods

Date of Report: January 22, 2018

Area Report:

Middle 30s for temps and traffic took a toll on our trails. They are mostly pretty brown. Thats the bad news. The great news is that it has started to snow in Sayner. Jaxon is here!!! Reports are all over the place with predicted amounts. I don’t even want to pass on what they are saying. What I will say is that even a few inches, once groomed, will bring all of our trails back to excellent!!! Speaking of grooming, we will be out with three groomers tonight – leveling and packing what ever White Gold that Mother Nature brings us!!!

As always, ride with caution and be ready for icy corners. Many corners can start the day snow covered but end up icy with traffic.

Please continue to be cautious on the lakes. The weight of more snow can force the ice down which pushes water up through cracks to form a slush pocket. The slush pockets can come and go.

News and Reports:

There are logging operations in the following locations: Trail 9 between Hwy 70 (TIN 364) and Ross Lake Rd (TIN 225), Trail 7 between Wharton Lake Rd (TIN 218) and Old K (Tin 217), and Trail 7 between Hwy K (TIN 216) and Lake Laura Rd (TIN 214). There is also logging in the Jean Lake Rd area of Trail 7 North, between TINS 227 & 800. That logging should be in the woods off the trail.

(TIN = Trail Intersection Numbers)

Please watch out for these logging areas. Slow down and stay out of the way of the loggers. DO NOT hassle the loggers. They have the right to close down sections of any trail they are logging near or using. If they get hassled too much, that is exactly what they will do – shut that trail down. The logging operations can run at anytime of the day or night. Loggers use some of the trails to drive in and out. So please be watchful in logging areas for trucks on the trail.

Area Report:
With the warmer weather this past weekend and heavy traffic all clubs will be out getting things back in shape weather permitting. We have a Winter Storm Warning until midnight tonight. Anywhere from 2-5 inches in the far western part of Gogebic County to up to 8 inches from Watersmeet to Trout Creek. We will keep you updated on the outcome.

PLEASE STAY ON TRAILS. WE HAVE BEEN GETTING COMPLAINTS THAT SOME HAVE NOT BEEN STAYING ON TRAILS, RIDING ON UNMARKED TRAILS CAN LOSE EASEMENT FOR OUR TRAIL SYSTEM SO PLEASE STAY ON TRAILS!!!!!!

THE GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY REPORTS:
01/22/2018
Warm weather allows snow to move quickly and easily so the clubs have a large task this week. Most trails have a hard base intact, except for the corners where they are swept and bermed up. Groomers will be out non-stop as temperatures remain below freezing to put the snow back into place and cut out all the bumps. Expect some thin areas and icy corners as you spot-on mentioned. Wakefield to Hurley was groomed this morning, groomer is coming into Ironwood right now. Trail 8 was groomed Saturday 12am-7am, trail 2 to Marenisco. Our club personally has never seen whoops that big on our trail system as we did on Saturday. Groomer runs that normally take 4 hours took 7. That’s how much more work warm temps cause us!

LAKE GOGEBIC AREA GROOMER REPORT:
Jan 19 Update no new report this morning.

Groomers were out in full force last week with the cold temperatures. This weekend, the temperatures are supposed to get to the high of 43 degrees on Friday and 32 degrees on Saturday. This makes it difficult to groom at these temperatures. We will be grooming at night when the temperatures get below freezing to set up the trails. You may get a smooth trail in the morning, but expect bumps during the afternoon hours. Hope everyone has a good weekend and stay safe while riding the trails. And remember to stay on your side of the trail and stop for stop signs.

U.P. THUNDER RIDERS OF WATERSMEET GROOMERS REPORT:

Trail 3 north of trail 2 to bond falls – fair thin areas
Trail 3 north of Bond falls – good
Trail 2 west of Watersmeet- fair with thin areas
Trail 13 south of trail 2 – fair

THINK SNOW!

PLEASE STAY ON MARKED TRAILS. RIDING ON UNMARKED TRAILS CAN RESULT IN THE CLUB LOSING EASEMENT OF THAT TRAIL AND YOU POSSIBLE GETTING A TICKET….

Trail Report – : Boulder Junction, Wisconsin – January 22, 2018

Reporter:boulderwi

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 8-10

Date of Report: January 22, 2018

Area Report:

Trail report for January 22, 2018, Fair condition. Over the weekend with the temps warming up and the heavy traffic our trails turned bad quickly. There were over 1200 snowmobiles counted on our trail counter from Friday thru Sunday. Most of our trails have turned brown and getting thin and soft. The good news is that this afternoon we are expected to get a snowstorm of 6 inches plus coming directly to the Northwoods in our area. This snow is very well needed. Our Groomers will be out during the week to smooth out the trail. Use caution in active logging areas. There is very little snow and logging equipment can be on the trail at any time. With all this snow coming there can be very low visibility so watch out for oncoming snowmobiles. Corners can still be bare and icy. Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Wet packy SNOW is moving into the area about noon today.  Weather guys are calling for 3-5 inches of SNOW today with another 1-3 inches tonight.  SNOW is going to be heavy at times.  Boy can’t wait to get out there riding some fresh SNOW!  Nothing better!

The groomers were out in full force last night prepping the trails for this heavy SNOW fall.  Nearly the entire system was groomed last night.  Thanks again drivers.  Remember give them 2 thumbs up.  Also pull over so they can get by you.  The equipment is not designed to go off trail.  As riders if we go in & get stuck the groomers can pull us out.  Not the same if we had to try to pull them out.

Conditions right now before the SNOW are FAIR in town.  GOOD to VERY GOOD pretty much everywhere else. Heading north & east in the woods farther out there are areas of EXCELLENT.

Here are a few continuing reminders:

  • Trail 1N logging operation continues in the section between the Town of Washington Town Hall & Eagle Lake.  Clearly marked with signs.
  • Wisconsin River Trail – 10W/13N  & Manske Swamp – 3N are being groomed off & on. There are rough spots but it is frozen tight. All SNOW covered.  Have had no reports of any slush out on either of these trails.  Do not leave the trail to be safe.

CATFISH LAKE LOOP & EAGLE LAKE TRAILS ARE NOW BOTH MARKED AND OFFICIALLY OPEN.  PLEASE STAY BY THE BARRELS TO BE SAFE.  VERY HARD SURFACE.  NO REPORTS OF SURFACE SLUSH AS OF LAST NIGHT.  REMINDER THE CATFISH LAKE LOOP TO LUMPY’S IS NO LONGER A TRAIL.

If you are riding zip on over to the “grade” to check out the 2018 Eagle River Area Fire Department ICE CASTLE!!!!  Located adjacent to the downtown “grade” trail by the Historic Railroad Grade.  The lights installed change colors.
