Ely Area Lakes & Trails: Most lakes have good solid ice, however, thin ice may exist in areas with current (streams, narrows, rivers).  Lakes do have slushy areas and some pressure ridges.  Area lakes are staked, with the exception of Birch and Mud Lake (hopefully staked by Sunday).  All trails along the Echo Trail are groomed.  Hidden Bay is closed due to active logging.  There is logging between Birch Lake and White Iron, so please use caution and remember the trails are shared with logging equipment.  Overall trail condition is fair.

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: up to 4 inches

Date of Report: January 17, 2018

Area Report:

Another update for today.  As the day has progressed, I can rate these trails no better that fair to good.  After talking with the groomer drivers and checking out the trail myself, there are a few good smaller areas but most of the trail is FAIR at best, due to a lack of snow.   The trail is open, frozen base and rideable.  Still be careful for rocks, ruts and uneven ground.

Also…send us some snow.  Thank you.

Trail Report – : Keweenaw Peninsula / Houghton-Hancock, South Range, Copper Harbor, Michigan – January 17, 2018

Reporter:tpeters

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 32″ to 48″

Date of Report: January 17, 2018

Area Report:

Sun is out today, 20 degrees, but feels colder for sure.  Beautiful day for riding.  Forecast is to warm up for the next 3 or so days, then more snow!  Don’t worry, all of our snow will not melt, you will be able to ride every day.  Trails will get soft and groomers won’t go out during the day if its too warm, but they will go out at night when it cools off.  I have had riders calling all day.  First of all, I have no idea how much snow we will loose.  I have been told that I am a witch, but my powers do not include that! lol!  But, I can say with certainty, there is plenty of snow to ride.  Main roads will get bare, as will some parking lots, but not the trails.  I am only saying this about the Keweenaw Peninsula, Houghton/Hancock, Twin Lakes area.  Baraga, Ontonagon and those areas, I have no idea, you have to check with them.

All trails are now open and being groomed.  Watch for the groomers when out on the trails.  Give them a thumbs up and let them know you appreciate their effort.  They are doing their best.

Remember to stay off all ice, especially when it gets warm these next few days.  The ice is thin and there already is slush under the snow, it will only get worse.  Respect private property and others on the trail.  Slow the f***** down.  Seriously, where are you going in a hurry?  Aren’t you on a vacation?  Slow down and take in the beauty and enjoy it.  Stay on your side of the trail, please! Save the drinking for after the riding!!

Stay safe out there and see you on the trails!
