Area Report:
There just isn’t much good I can report as the weather forecasts were correct and warm weather hit the area yesterday. There is good riding where the trails are shaded by the woods but getting there requires riding over a lot of slop and dirt. There is a lot of bare pavement on road routes. Lakes are slushy. Stay by the barrels when crossing.
The forecast is calling for the same warm weather until next Thursday when a cool down is supposed to start. Then on Friday, the prognosticators are calling for 5 to 8 inches. That certainly is not a guarantee as too many storms, as they get closer, can track more to the north or south than anticipated. We’ll keep an eye on that one.

Man oh man what crazy weather. Hit 50 yesterday. And the snow continues to melt.
Trail Boss Brian reports that “all grooming has been suspended until weather permits”.
Here’s a report from the trail from a rider:
We rode Alt 13S to Three Lakes and stopped at Sportsmans’ to visit Joe & Lisa. It’s a little warm. Trails were a lot smoother than we expected but lack of snow creates issues. There were some muddy open spots close to Sportsmans’ in a big open area. On the way back still mostly smooth but the evil sun is doing a lot of damage.
Both Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are safe by the orange reflective barrels. Surface slush. Stay by the barrels as there can be danger out there.

See Ya On The Trails Soon I Hope!

Area Report:
It is amazing what a day of full sun and 53 degrees will do. From trails that were just rode yesterday, to tonight the conditions have significantly degraded. The exposed trails are snirty with bare spots now. The road crossings are bare. I’m sure there are some good spots to ride, but there will be poor spots on most any trail route.
The corners are becoming blown out and icy. The groomers have been parked to preserve the base that’s out there.
The only positive spin I can put on it, is there is still 5 weeks left in the season, we may be able to salvage some of it with cold and snow in the future.

Temporary Trail Diversion in Brimley
A street closure due to a collapsed building in Brimley causes short diversion of trail #8. When turning west off M-221 in downtown Brimley the first block of the trail is moved just south of the street across from the Bay Mills Laundry facility and portion of their driveway. Follow the signs.
Trails are in good to excellent shape. We still have one down but our new Pisten Bully has arrived and is being put to work even though the new drag is not here yet.
We have a new plowed parking area at the beginning of trail #8 under the International Bridge, which now has an all season Porta-John.
If you are staying in the Sault please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business. Please do that in all towns you visit. The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!!!!!!
We now have a marked trail that will be groomed on occasion to get to parts and service at Chippewa Motors. it comes into the back of their lot from the east side of M-129 when you come out of the woods.
Remember trail base is the amount of snow between your track and the ground below not the amount of fluff piled up in the woods. 10 inches of snow compresses to less than an inch on the trail.
Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –
Base 3- 6 inches -Trail is in good to excellent Condition.
Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 –
Base 3 – 7 inches -Trail is in good to excellent Condition. Trail going west off M-221 is moved to south of street as building roof next to road collapsed and county closed road.
When going across the bridge in Brimley make sure you go with the flow of traffic! Blowing and drifting occurs when you first leave Brimley.
Raco to Naomikong Trail #8 [where Paradise meets us], Trail #8 –
Base 4 – 8 inches – Trail is in good to Excellent Condition.
Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49 –
Base 3- 6 inches – Trail is in good condition. Wet areas by casino are frozen and groomed.
We now have a marked & groomed trail going to Chippewa Motors. It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449. It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.
City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember most City streets are open to traffic 20mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right hand side of street not on sidewalks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.
Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –
Base 3 – 6 inches – Trail is in Good to excellent Condition. The wet area just south of Soo on powerline is frozen and groomed. Make sure you follow reroute once you cross bridge going south at 7 Mile road . Wet areas reopened up
When the trail is running along roads make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.
Kinross loop & south to Pickford, Parts of Trail #49, #472, and #494 –
Base 2- 6 inches – Trail in excellent condition. Watch for trucks on trail.
Kinross to Raco & Rudyard, Parts of trail #472 & #480 –
Base 3 – 5 inches – Trail in good to excellent Condition. Watch for reroute signs just west of Kinross. Portion to Rudyard in good condition.
The Downtown Trail is signed and cones up Portage Ave! Big frozen snow banks, left from the big warm up, are hindering grooming parts of the route, but streets adjacent are open to sleds.

Trail Conditions: Poor
Snow Cover: 6-12″
Date of Report: February 18, 2017
Area Report:
With the warm winter weather we’ve been having trails are in varying conditions throughout the County. With even warmer temps in the forecast and an increasingly warm sun trails will be melting during the day and solid and icy at night. The snowpack is generally holding in the forested and shaded areas, but not as much on the exposed farm fields and roads.
Please keep in mind that some of these trails are on private land. Private landowners give us permission to maintain portions of these trails on their property. If a segment is in poor condition or if riding could result in damage, please refrain from use. Any damage to the trail system, especially those that exist on private land, will jeopardize our future use privileges and potentially result in permanent trail closures.
With warmer temperatures forecasted this weekend there is the potential to create wet, sensitive and highly variable trail conditions. As a result, ATV use has the potential to damage the system and create additional problems when colder temperatures return. To help minimize damage to the snowpack all ATV use is prohibited on snowmobile trails if the temperatures reach 28 degrees or higher. This includes tracked or wheeled ATVs and UTVs. However, ATV use is still allowed on the Tri-County Corridor and Town Road routes.
Trail Closures:
NORTHERN BAYFIELD COUNTY
In the far Northwest Corner of the county Trail 1 was groomed yesterday and is in very good shape up to highway 13. It’s nice for the locals until it turns to mush by Saturday. I’m sure that’s it for grooming unless big changes occur. In the Port Wing Area the trails are in varying condition with woodland sections ranging from fair to good. Most of the road segments are in poor to fair. Looking toward the weekend things do not look good, with temperatures heading into the upper 40’s or even 50’s. Near Herbster and Corny trails are holding snow and rideable, but Trail 1 may need to be closed after the weekend.
In the Valhalla area the groomer will have been over everything by Friday (2/17/17) with the exception of south of Washburn. Despite the warm temperatures trail conditions have held however with a holiday weekend and high traffic they will diminish fast starting Saturday afternoon we’ll see what happens come Monday as it sounds like rain and warm temps. Ride with extreme caution, logging has started on North boundary and corners are icy.
CENTRAL BAYFIELD COUNTY
Trails in the Iron River area have been groomed as best as possible this week and are fair at this time. With warm up starting, not sure when we’ll be out grooming again. We expect trails south of Hwy 2 will be the first to go as traffic and warm weather finally got through the base. The Tri County Corridor held up quite well but road crossing lead ins are starting to show their age with some being bare so be aware of those issues and expect icy areas due to melting during daylight hours and refreezing overnight throughout the area.
SOUTHERN BAYFIELD COUNTY
Barnes: Barnestormers snowmobile trails are in poor to good condition. Trails appear to be very icy on the corners. Our road routes are down to very little snow coverage and dirt. If you venture out riding, use extreme caution. Our grooming operations ceased on Monday 2/13.
Namakagon: NTG was out grooming last night and the east and north side of our trail system is finished. Trails to Clam Lake are currently in good to very good shape. We will also be out today (2/16/17) as the temperatures will be cool enough to groom for the upcoming weekend. All of our trails should be done by the end of today (2/16/17). There are some very unseasonably warm temperatures just around the corner for this weekend. We are hoping out trails will hold up through the traffic and warm weather. Trail 15 North of Camp Eight Rd is getting thin, no grooming beyond this point. Still rideable with caution. We likely will not be grooming until temperatures drop again and snow falls in our area. Please be safe on the trails, watch for other sleds and groomers (which are out day and night).
Drummond: Trails in the Drummond area have been groomed as of Wednesday (2/15/17). North 63 to Sweden road has been groomed, snow conditions in this area are poor to fair; the road route is mostly bare, no grooming past this point to Mason or East 4 to Ashland County due to lack of snow cover. 63S to Lake Owen is also in fair to good condition with bare spots that are exposed to the sun. Trail 7 to trail 35 is in fair condition as well as trail 6 to Janes road route. All trail lead ins to the woods are in poor condition at the road crossings. Will try to get one last touch up in to on 63S before the weekend.
Timber Sale Activity:
Trail 1 – South of Cornucopia – off Stage Rd. a sale has gone active on this section of trail so watch for caution signs and logging equipment.
Trail 31 – South of Barnes – A one mile section of Trail 31 South that has been plowed to allow the road to freeze down for a future logging job, but it is still passable. There is also a private logging operation using a small section of Trail 31 South.
