Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – January 9, 2024

Reporter:haywardlakes

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 0-5

Date of Report: January 9, 2024

Area Report:

Trails remain closed, but just a quick update. We do have some snow on the ground, however not enough just yet.  We will update if any new snow falls.  The temperatures have been consistently cold this week and ice is forming, however, most of the lakes do not have consistent good ice. While there may be 5″ to more in some areas there is open water in others. Lost Land Lake is the only lake to be reported as having consistent safe ice throughout. All others have open areas, so without good, consistent ice throughout the whole lake to ensure safety there is no plan to stake as of now.

Do remember our ATV/UTV trails ARE OPEN! So, if you are itching to ride or have that snowmobile trip planned keep those plans and grab your ATV/UTV or rent one and hop on the trails. It is beautiful out there with the white snow cover.  Please do not ride on wetlands that are not frozen, as that damages the forming ice.

Lake reports so far (these are the only areas we have had reports on, if the lake is not listed, we have not received a report which means no news/change yet):

-Lost Land – volunteers are planning a staking day as they do have good ice

-Chippewa Flowage – many areas average 5″ but still open water in many areas.

-Grindstone/Whitefish/LCO – open water in many areas

-Sissabagama – iced over but not safe measurable ice

-Spider and Tiger Cat – no report, checking early this week

-Round Lake – not consistent ice

We will post an update AS SOON as there are any changes.

Trail Report – : Ely, Minnesota – January 4, 2024

Ely, MN Chamber of Commerce

Reporter:Ely Chamber of Commerce/Explore MN Visitor Center

Trail Conditions: No Snow

Snow Cover: No Snow

Date of Report: January 4, 2024

Area Report:

Minnesota snowmobile trails officially opened Friday, Dec. 1, but the lack of snow cover means the trails aren’t yet usable, the Department of Natural Resources said in a reminder.

Several conditions must be met before trails are open, groomed, and ready for travel, the DNR said:

* The ground must be frozen. Where trails cross wetlands, 15 inches of ice are needed to support the weight of trail groomers.

* Adequate snow cover of about 12 inches must be on the ground to allow for trail packing and grooming.

* Trails must be cleared of fallen trees, signs put in place, and gates opened.

While snowmobilers await the arrival of snow and groomed trails, now is a good time to ensure current registrations and snowmobiles are in good operating order, review safety training, and check local trail maps for route changes or new trails.

Area Report:

Trails remain closed until we receive enough snow to pan the trails and set a base up.

Temps have been cold the last few days to help lakes and swamps to freeze up nicely.

Keep doing the snow dance. There are several systems moving across the US, the one we will be watching is 7-9 days out. Depending on the track and which low pressure system wins out as the stronger one, will show where the heavier precipitation goes. Some models have it going across southern Illinois, and others have it covering northern Wisconsin. Time will tell.

Thanks to all the visitors that were in the area this holiday weekend. The local establishments appreciate all the business and support you showed.

The Trailside roast that was scheduled for January 13th has been canceled.
