Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – January 5, 2021

Reporter:haywardlakes
Trail Conditions: Fair
Snow Cover: 6-8"
Date of Report: January 5, 2021
Area Report:

The center of the county starting at the Chippewa Flowage to the north the trails are reported from good to fair. More towards to side of good the more north you travel. The Flowage itself is reported to be good as are the other lakes such as Round, Spider, Tiger Cat, Nelson, Lost Land, Moose and Sand. Some areas on the lakes are slushy so as always, please stay on the marked trails and ride at cautionary speeds. The wooded trails have a bit more protection and some areas are good and some are fair. The trails in the open are more minimal such as near roads. Some corners in the woods have become minimal and pulled up some rocks with passing sleds. Most lakes in the county are now staked with the exception of LCO, Grindstone, Whitefish, Callahan and Chetac, we will update when they are safe for travel and staked. There is no ETA at this time and we understand this is a desired area and will share any info as soon as it comes in but at this time safety is priority.

The southern part of the county has reported to have minimal snow and will not be sending their groomers out until more snow is received. When more snow falls and riding in that area becomes good please be sure to mark that area on your map and visit those locations!

With mention of groomers there are a couple out in the Seeley Hills area and the Round Lake/Lost Land Lake/Moose Lake area. All groomers that decide to go out do so on the trails with the most snow and during the coldest hours at this time to ensure no damage to the snow or unearth rocks close to the surface. So the grooming schedule in the county will be very light this week until more snow is received.

Trail 18 between the Tiger Cat Flowage and Lake Callahan still has the temporary closing until the bridge is complete. Update will be posted upon that completion. Please respect this closure. Thank you for your patience.

The weeks temps will be warmer during the day, only one day reaching 32 and the rest mostly in the high 20’s during the days and mid to high teens in the evenings. Not much snow in this week’s forecast however we did receive a freshing up today which was unexpected so that goes to show it can be so unpredictable in the Northwood’s and can change with every hour, lake effect can have an advantage so never say never! We are happy to see anything but even just 3″ would make conditions excellent so get your snow dance on!
